Subject: Reds @ Expos
The Reds may not be having much of an effect on the N.L. West pennant race (we're obviously no match for Dr. Frankenstein's Giants), but we sure had an impact on the N.L. East in this series: Cincy marches in to Yankee Stadium to face Les Expos and emerges.... with a SWEEP. Cincy got most of the breaks in this one (an incalculable rarity), and the 'spos almost never came up with the clutch hit. Montreal managed 13 hits in the extra-inning finale, but collected only 14 in the first three games combined. Game 1: Jim McGlothlin was wild (7 BB, 1 K), but he and two relievers threw a 5-hitter as the Reds prevailed by the score of 7-2. Cincy did all of its damage early, greeting Steve Renko in the top of the first with a triple, home run & home run by the first 3 Reds' batters. Tony Perez, batting cleanup, with homers under 1-5, 1-6 & (part of) 1-7... rolled a 1-4. The Reds had a 6-1 lead after 2 innings and for once managed not to massively choke on it. Game 2: Don Wilson & Steve Hargan were tied 1-1 after seven innings, the Reds having left a jillion runners on base, when HAL brought in Barry Lersch to pitch for the Expos. Cincy proceeded to whack him around (not for the last time), and handed the previously-undefeated (9-0) hurler his first defeat of 1970. Lersch allowed 8 runners in his two innings of work, leading to a final score of 5-2. Lee May, having a brutal season, keyed the eighth-inning rally with his 16th home run of the season. Game 3: Another outstanding outing by both starting pitchers, as Tom Seaver bested Chris Short by the score of 1-0. The lone run scored in the Cincy seventh when Woody Woodward led off with a double, and was driven in two outs later by a Bobby Tolan single. Seaver gave up 4 hits, walked 3 and K'd 9 in achieving his 17th win against 9 defeats. Game 4: Cincy returned to form, allowing a 5-2 ninth-inning lead to become a tie game as relievers Don Gullett and Clay Carroll pulled off the successful choke. But Barry Lersch was once again the goat, losing the game in the eleventh when Tolan smacked a two-out, two-run homer. Joe Hoerner (2-2) got the win. Montreal out-LOBbed the Reds 13-3 in this game, which sure didn't help their cause. Alan |
