Subject: Reds @ Mets

In the first half of this week's home-and-home with the Mets the schizoid Reds have another strangely competent road series, which deserved to be a sweep but wasn't.  However the second half isn't likely to go nearly as well (Reds are 4-11 @ Riverfront vs. NYN over the past few seasons)....

Game 1: The 1998 Reds seem to have a slight problem with road series openers and this week was no exception, although it should have been.  The duel between Dennys Reyes and Masato Yoshii was scoreless midway through the 6th inning when Reyes ran into a minor spot of trouble.  First he wild pitched a run home with a non-hitting pitcher at the plate, and a few moments later suddenly found himself trailing 7-0 with ALL SEVEN RUNS being unearned.  The Reds scored 4 in the 9th to make the final score 7-5, but it was academic at that point and just another totally unearned, undeserved loss.  With 0 ER in 6 IP, Reyes lowered his ERA to 1.69.

Game 2: NYN starter Bobby Jones not only pitched well but the non-hitter gave himself a 1-0 lead with a sac fly after yet another surgical split card result in his team's favor (a triple by a non-hitting shortstop) while CIN batters got the adverse split card result a mere 12 out of 13 times in the first two games.  Seconds after the Reds tied the score in the 6th the Mets took a 2-1 lead and held it until the 9th when John Franco gave up 3 singles good for 2 runs.  In the bottom of the frame Jose Canseco led off with a single and, as the tying run, was still at first with 2 outs.  He then successfully stole second but in doing so actually helped the Reds -- because the batter rolled a $ choke which would have been a hit if Canseco had still been at first base.  Reds win, 3-2, outhitting the Mets 9-5.  Lopez got the relief win, his 5th, after Avery gave up 2 runs in 7 IP.

Game 3: The Reds got their fair share of the split card breaks for a change and rolled up a 9-2 win behind the pitching and hitting of normally Luckless Dave Burba.  Burba pitched a complete game, scattering six hits, and this not-so-non-hitting pitcher (though you can't tell from his luckless sub-.100 average) homered, scored 2 runs and drove in a pair against Steve Sparks.  Sean Casey also homered for the Reds among his 3 hits.  The Reds called off the dogs after tallying 5 times in the 6th, LOBbing the bases loaded in each of the next 2 frames without scoring.
