Subject: Reds @ Padres

A series the Reds could easily have swept (or at least won), but much to the delight of the home team the Reds gave a textbook demonstration of those two things we have been so renowned for over the years, more than any other team: clutch choking and bullpen arson....

Game 1: CIN starter Hipolito Pichardo left after 6 innings during which he permitted a grand total of 1 hit and 1 run which was donated without even a hit, and he had a 3-1 lead while still in search of win #1 of 1998.  Doug Glanville got 3 of today's 5 RBIs with a home run in the inning where Pichardo was pinch-hit for, giving the Reds a seemingly secure 7-1 lead.

But these are the Reds.  Relievers Scott Sullivan (whose damage in this series was not yet complete) and Hector Carrasco combined for 2 IP and ELEVEN baserunners, 7 of which scored.  Fortunately however, before the Reds choked up 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th we scored 3 in the top of the frame.  Albie Lopez entered the bottom of the 9th with 3 runs already in, the bases loaded and nobody out.... and got the first batter to hit into a run-scoring DP then retired the next batter to save the 10-8 win.  The Reds LOBbed 10 to San Diego's 4, another reason why this close contest never should have been remotely close.

====================================================================================

Game 2: Cincy outplayed the Pads again, but were screwed on split card home runs chances while the other team didn't miss.  Toss in some timely sabotage defense like a 3-base howler by Reggie Sanders with -- of course -- the pitcher batting, and a perfect 0 for 9 performance with RISP (San Diego only had 2 AB with RISP all day) and it adds up to a 3-1 loss.

Steve Avery was the luckless CIN starter who could sue the rest of the roster for lack of support, and Carrasco sealed the defeat with a late gopher to Ken Caminiti.

====================================================================================

Game 3: Unsatisfied with a mere 0 for 9 with RISP, the Reds managed to do even worse today (0 for 10) and squandered numerous chances where just *one* hit would have been sufficient to win the game.  Luckless Dave Burba had an outstanding start with 9 IP, 0 runs and 10 strikeouts which naturally was insufficient to win.  Burba joined in the luckless offense by missing our 17th split card chance at a home run in the series and the game was scoreless into the 10th inning.

A sac fly put the Reds on top 1-0 in the 10th but Burba was unable to pitch indefinitely so that meant the bullpen had to take over.  Ace arsonist Sullivan wasted no time at all: his first pitch hit the first batter of the bottom of the 10th and the next batter hit a pitch over the wall to complete the 2-1 choke.

Aside from Lopez' salvage job in the opener the CIN bullpen pitched 4 innings, allowed 10 hits (2 gophers), issued 3 free passes and gave up a mere 10 runs.  Only 2 of the 10 were actually costly, but it's good to keep in practice in case a game really is on the line at some point.

CIN starters on the other hand pitched 21 IP and allowed just 2 earned runs, deserving a far better fate than they received, but 10 runners stranded *in scoring position* over the last 2 games plus that 0 for 19 with RISP was something they couldn't overcome.
