Subject: Montreal at Los Angeles Week 17
Sometime the timing of games played as they reach us via e-mail can be very interesting and create extra drama. I'm sitting down to play the Expos in week 17 knowing we are tied for first with a Met team that has a full head of steam. I'm ready to throw out the first pitch when we find out the Reds kick us in the gut with a four game sweep. A few minutes later the Mets win three of four in Pittsburgh. Suddenly, the Dodger series becomes a lot more important!! Gratefully, the Dodger's normally solid pitching is off and the Dodger defense kicks in some extra hits. The Expos win 3 of 3 with a boatload of offense led by the Big Dog Alex Johnson who had 9 hits, 4 runs, and 7 rbis in the series. LeGrand Orange chipped in with 5 hits, 4 runs, and 4 rbis. I love this scrappy team, win or lose... New Montreal Manager attached. Game 1 Rusty Staub had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the mighty Montreal Expos beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 6 to 1. Joel Horlen (7-4) gave Montreal a solid outing. He went 7 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. Montreal and Los Angeles each finished the night with 9 hits. Game 2 Alex Johnson had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Dodger Stadium where the dominant Montreal Expos beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 8 to 6. Chris Short (8-8) had a fairly solid outing. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Los Angeles was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. Jack Aker recorded his 31st save. Claude Osteen (10-13) was charged with the loss. He allowed Montreal 5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work. Game 3 Alex Johnson had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Carl Morton went the distance as the dominant Montreal Expos topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 13 to 7 at Dodger Stadium. Johnson led the offense for Montreal. He lined a base-hit in the 1st inning, smacked a three-run homer (his 8th of the season) in the 2nd inning, slapped a one-base hit resulting in a run in the 3rd inning and slapped a single in the 7th inning. Los Angeles scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them from victory. The victory went to Morton (10-9) who went the distance allowing 7 runs. Don Sutton (11-6) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 6 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA jump from 2.99 to 3.27. |
