Chicago found a somewhat unique way to reduce our LOB total: we turned a catcher with a +3 arm into Johnny Bench. Despite letting 4 balls get to the backstop in game one, the Mets' Jesse Gonder nailed Lou Brock in game two, then the Cubs failed on 4 of 5 SB attempts in game 3. Gonder, a 5, also pulled off a nearly-impossible plate block in that game. Gonder was also the late-inning hero of the lone NYN victory, which occurred in a fashion that would be utterly unbelievable had the opponent been a team other than the Cubs.... Game 1: Claude Osteen homered to help his own cause for the Mets, but didn't do much else right as the Cubs pecked him to death with ten singles (and two Ron Santo homers) in Chicago's 7-2 win. Santo's 3-hit, 4 RBI performance enabled Camilo Pascual to cruise to an easy win. Pascual walked nobody and fanned 11. Game 2: The Cubs stranded 11, but the two we plated were quite enough for Dick Ellsworth, who tossed a 4-hit shutout. Two runs in nine innings is actually *better* than Ellsworth's usual putrid level of support from the Cubbie offense, which helps explain why he was 1-5 entering the week despite very good numbers other than in the win column. Game 3: Larry Jackson went the distance in a 4-1 win over Roger Craig. Duke Snider's seventh HR of 1963 in the NYN second was all the Mets got. Game 4: Vada Pinson missed a two run BP homer (1-19 chance) in the fifth, and the Cubs had a 6-3 lead in the ninth with the Mets down to their final out, so those two runs would hardly be important anyway, right? Ah, but these are the Cubs. In the NYN ninth, Ron Santo's blown-x play (sometimes the relievers need a little help to begin choking) put a runner at second. With two outs, an Eddie Bressoud single and a Fred Whitfield homer quickly tied the score, then Jesse Gonder won it with a two run homer with two outs in the tenth off "ace" reliever Jim Umbricht.
