Subject: BAA @ SEA Week 13 (plus Week 14 CM)

Embarrassed by a three-game sweep in Seattle early in the season, the Orioles evened the scales in a sweep that put the Orioles above .500 and the Mariners below it.

Game 1: BAA 6, SEA 4

Seattle starter Jeff Fassero had a rocky 1st inning, as the Orioles batted around and scored 4 runs on 6 hits.  The Mariners strung together a walk and two hits in the 2nd, but Bobby Bonilla threw Edgar Martinez out at home (65% chance of scoring)  to end the inning; Ken Griffey Jr. returned the favor in the top of the 3rd, nailing Roberto Alomar (also 65% chance of scoring) at the plate.  In the bottom of the inning, after Joey Cora singled in the first Seattle run, Martinez hit a two run double and Bonilla booted it, allowing Martinez to score and tie the game at 4-4.

Something I've never seen before in Strat-o-Matic: In the 7th, with Jeffrey Hammonds on 3rd and no outs, Craig Biggio was on 1st with a 100% chance of getting the lead and a 100% chance of a successful steal.  So when he tried to steal, can someone explain how he got picked off??????  In any event, Hammonds was stranded at third.  In the 8th, with two on and two out, Devon White put the Orioles ahead with a clutch double, although the second runner, Trey Beamon, was gunned down at home (again by Griffey, again on a 65% chance of scoring.) The O's added an insurance run in the 9th, thanks to a Rafael Palmeiro homer.  The Mariners got the tying runs on base in the bottom of the 9th, but the game ended on a double play where the second out was called due to interference.

Game 2: BAA 4, SEA 3

Just as they had in Game 1, the O's batted around in the 1st inning, this time scoring three runs off Todd Van Poppel.  Just as they had in Game 1, the Mariners ended the second inning with a runner thrown out at home trying to score (although it was Dan Wilson, with only a 45% chance of success.)   In the 3rd, Alex Rodriguez (85% chance of success) was caught stealing -- which stung even more when the next two batters got hits before Orioles starter Pete Schourek shut down the rally.  In the top of the 4th, Baltimore's Brady Anderson successfully stole second (70% chance) but tried to score on a Biggio hit (80% chance) and was thrown out by Eric Davis. Seattle's other Davis (Russ) hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. In the 8th, Devon White joined the "I thought I was faster than that" club, caught stealing on a 70% chance.  In the bottom of the 8th, a long ball from Griffey tied the game.

In the 9th, the O's *finally* caught a break on the basepaths, as there was no throw on Alomar's steal attempt (95% chance success, but only a 19% chance of getting a lead.)  Palmeiro then doubled and Alomar scored what proved to be the winning run.  Reliever Rich Delucia got the win and arguably deserved it, despite the blown save -- the Davis homer was the only baserunner he allowed in three innings while striking out six Mariners.

Game 3: BAA 15, SEA 2

With Randy Johnson on the mound for Seattle, the Orioles didn't bat around in the 1st, but they did manage one run on three singles.  They took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd on a rare solo homer by Lenny Webster (his 4th of the year) and a rarer two-run shot by Hammonds (his 2nd), then got two more in the 3rd on an uncommon homer by Bonilla (his 5th.)  In the 5th, Johnson was still on the hill to give up a two-run double to Hammonds that made it 8-0.  Seattle finally got on the board in the bottom of the 5th as Martinez singled in an unearned run.  It took a two-run double by Biggio in the 7th to chase Johnson;Biggio subsequently scored on a Palmeiro single, followed by back-to-back homers by Matt Williams (only his 2nd of the year) and Bonilla to make it 14-1.  BJ Surhoff singled in the final Baltimore run in the 9th. With such a big cushion, fatigued Orioles starter Charles Nagy stuck around to notch his first complete game this year, yielding a solo HR to Rodriguez in the 9th.
