Subject: Montreal at Chicago Week 18
I decided to try and strike while the iron was hot by playing early this week. Pretty successful week as Expos take 3 of 4. However, the Cubs played tough and if it weren't for some shoddy defense that might have one a couple more. New Montreal Manager attached. I apologize for failing to save game 125 as normally prescribed. Game 1 46,543 fans watched an exciting game at Wrigley Field. The Montreal Expos topped the Chicago NL Cubs by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. Montreal took the lead for keeps in the 7th inning scoring a single run. Chicago NL threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Carl Morton (11-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 4 runs. Jack Aker gained credit for his 32nd save. Vicente Romo(6-13) absorbed the loss in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. Steve Bivens was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! The Cubs played us tough. Once again we capitalized on our opponents mistakes and came away with a victory.' Game 2 At Wrigley Field the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos 4 to 1. Pepitone and Nettles each hit home runs to lead the Cub attack. Bert Blyleven (7-7) had a solid outing for Chicago NL. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. Chicago NL out-hit Montreal for the game, 9 hits to 4. Blyleven got help from Phil Hennigan who earned his 4th save. Steve Renko (10-9) was hit with the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Game 3 Rusty Staub had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the powerful Montreal Expos outscored the lifeless Chicago NL Cubs 6 to 2. Joel Horlen (8-4) had a solid outing for Montreal. He allowed 9 hits and no walks in 7 innings. Montreal had a total of 10 hits for the game. Larry Dierker (6-14) was the loser. He allowed 6 runs and 10 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings. Manager Steve Bivens was pleased with Horlen's performance. 'Once again Joel pitched a steady game. We knew we were getting a real competitor when we picked him up last spring. He spreads out those hits and doesn't issue any free passes.' Game 4 Chris Short (9-9) with the help of the bullpen blanked the woeful Chicago NL Cubs at Wrigley Field. The powerful Montreal Expos scored 5 runs for the victory. Le Grand Orange broke open a 1-0 contest in the eighth inning with a two-run shot over the right field bleachers. Short had a solid outing for Montreal. He went 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks. Short struck out 7 Chicago NL batters. Montreal had 7 hits for the afternoon. Barry Lersch recorded his 2nd save. Barry Moore(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 walks. |
