Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

These two teams, who shouldn't be quite so evenly matched, played a trio of 1-run decisions followed by an extra-inning contest.  The Reds somehow failed to lose as many as we won....

Game 1: A mostly typical Cincy effort including a massive LOB "advantage" (10-4), choking with RISP (1 for 8), and the usual bullpen contribution (3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, all scoring with 2 outs).  What wasn't so typical was the outcome -- the Reds narrowly avert the choke and eke out a 7-6 win.  Bret Boone had a big series, going 8 for 16 with 8 RBI and 3 home runs, getting started today with a double, homer & 2 RBI.  After Delino DeShields came up with a bases-loaded triple with the Cards down to their final out, Mike Mohler (who had allowed the triple and a prior walk) was set to take the inevitable loss but instead fanned Eli Marrero to end the game.

Game 2: The Reds again came up with zilch in the clutch department but Boone smashed a pair of homers to give the visitors a 4-1 lead before Brett Tomko choked it all away in the SLN 5th via 4 extra base hits, 2 of them gophers.  In the CIN 7th, Mike Cameron walked, stole second and scored on a costly error.  Of the 8 errors made by St. Louis in the series, this was the only unearned run which resulted.  Reds win, 5-4, with Tomko getting the W and Sullivan & Lopez combining for 3 scoreless relief innings (stop the presses!).

Game 3: Boone had the day off, and the rest of the Cincy offense took it with him.  Dennys Reyes pitched fabulously though wildly as always (6 IP, 3 hits, 10 K's, 6 walks, 1 run) and that 1 run was, of course, precisely enough to lose.  Mark McGwire gophered leading off the 2nd to open and close the scoring for the day.  Reyes then loaded the bases for SLN with still 0 out, but incredibly got out of it.  The offense was not sufficiently inspired by that performance though we outhit the Cards 5-4, and recently activated Matt Morris went the distance for the 1-0 win.

Game 4: Another mostly typical Cincy effort including another massive LOB "advantage" (a mere 19 to 8), blowing leads of 3-0 and 8-6, and making one timely error which cost four critical unearned runs while SLN made 3 errors which cost them not a thing.  The Reds led in hits (18-13) and walks drawn (9-4) but kept things as close as possible by permitting FIVE gophers to come out and play.  The Reds broke the 8-8 tie in the 11th when Barry Larkin homered (our lone homer of the game) and that was followed by a pair of doubles and an RBI single.  Final score: 11-8.

Speaking of players who had a big series, Mark McGwire torched the luckless Cincy staff for a quartet of gophers and had 7 RBI.  He now has 45 round trippers in 96 games.

Alan
