Tom Tresh hit one over the fence at D.C. Stadium as theNew York AL Yankees
beat the Washington Senators in 13 innings by the count of 4 to 2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Finally, New York AL pulled the game out
in the 13th inning.  After an out was recorded, Tresh initiated the scoring
when he lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 8th of the season).  After
another out, Mickey Mantle stepped up to the plate and he smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 10th of the season).  New York AL had 7 hits for
the night.

Hal Reniff(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 innings. Don
Rudolph(0-2) was given the loss in relief.  He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 2
and 2/3 innings.

Al Downing struck out 11 batters as the New York AL Yankees beat the
floundering Washington Senators by a score of 4 to 1.

Downing(2-2) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Washington
hitters.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.86 to 2.55.  New York AL banged out 11 on
the afternoon.

Don Cardwell(3-8) was given the loss.  He was unable to control the New York
AL offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

Downing didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up.  When told he
had 11 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a
decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many.  Say, that's pretty
good, isn't it?'
