Subject: Reds @ Marlins
The Reds (.522 entering the week) appeared to have an easy schedule against the Cubs (.451) and Marlins (.354) but it somehow didn't turn out that way and the Reds couldn't even break the .500 mark thanks to an all-time record-setting performance by the Marlins in the series finale.... Game 1: FLN starter Andy Larkin was offered as a sacrifice to the Reds, who surprisingly did not fail to take advantage of the opportunity by scoring 11 times in the first 4 frames vs. Larkin and reliever Kurt Ojala. Seconds later, CIN starter Pete Harnisch ran into a spot of trouble and permitted 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth, all scoring after 2 were out. The last 5 frames were played to a scoreless tie. Final score: 11-5. The Reds collected 16 hits, none of which left the premises. Five Florida pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and just 2 free passes; Harnisch went the distance on a 9-hitter, 5 of the 9 occurring in the lone rally. Game 2: In similar fashion the Reds built a solid early lead (6-0) then shut off the attack entirely and let the Marlins get closer than they did previously. Final score: 6-4. HAL was particularly surgical against Cincy starter Steve Avery, focusing on his 4 column for numerous walks (8) and a few hits. Avery pitched into the 8th before Buddy Groom and Scott Sullivan combined to retire the last 4 batters without incident. Also in similar fashion to yesterday's contest, 100% of the home team's runs crossed the plate after 2 were out in an inning. Florida pitchers held the Reds to 8 hits, all singles, walked 3 and reached double digits in strikeouts again. Game 3: Florida's Doug Drabek, whose card is just about as terrible as Andy Larkin's, was enabled by HAL's dice rolls to dodge nearly every bullet and he allowed just 1 run in 6 innings before the Reds finally reached him for 3 in the 7th to take a 4-3 lead which became 5-3 in the 8th. So of course it was Choking Time, since these are the Reds. Hector Carrasco opened the FLN 8th by loading the bases (single, walk, walk) and retiring nobody before Mendoza-line hitter Craig Counsell cleared the sacks with a fatal 3-run double. Not satisfied with his team losing by merely a single run, Sullivan came in and got 2 outs before yielding the obligatory gopher. Final score: 8-5. The Marlins tied an unbreakable major league record for efficiency by getting 9 baserunners and stranding ZERO of them (one was erased on the bases). For a change, only 4 of the 8 opposition runs today scored after 2 were out in an inning. Cincy batters did not lack for potential RBIs, having 14 chances with RISP; the M's got only 4 such chances.
