Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

The Reds play a typical series -- lots of blown leads, late chokes, stranded runners, etc. -- and struggle to a split with the Cardinals....

Game 1: The Reds had a 3-0 lead in the 5th, but Brett Tomko faded and some timely sabotage defense resulted in an unearned run for the Cards and a 4-4 tie after 7 innings; Mike Mohler was charged with the UE run via Bobby Smith's error and Scott Sullivan racked up his 9th blown save of the year.  Cincy got 1 in the 10th before LOBbing the bases loaded but Mark McGwire's second of five gophers in this series tied the score again with his 63rd of the season in the bottom of the frame.  CIN outfielder Pat Watkins, who had exactly 63 fewer homers than McGwire at that moment, replied with one in the 11th -- an triple turned into an IPHR -- and Hector Carrasco, having choked away one lead, held it this time and the Reds prevailed by the count of 6-5.  Cincy pitchers held St. Louis to a mere 6 hits in 11 innings, but gave up the big ones at all the wrong times.

Game 2: The Reds outhit the Cards 10-8 overall but were shut out through 7 innings and trailed 4-0 until Watkins led off the 8th with a triple and the visitors were able to tie the score during the rally which followed.  It would have been a 5-run frame but for a runner gunned at the plate and we went into the bottom of the 9th still tied.  Would that gunned runner be important?  As it turned out, no.  Because Dennys Reyes, perhaps better suited as a starter than a reliever, issued a pair of free passes to open the inning and then choked up a 3-run game-ending gopher to Ron Gant.  Final score: 7-4.

Game 3: With -- who else? -- Luckless Dave Burba on the mound, the Reds LOBbed 11 and still managed to hit into 2 timely rally-killing DPs, but it was HAL's assault on the #1 defense in the N.L. which proved most costly in this utterly luckless 10-4 rout.  Burba absorbed all the damage, most of it coming in a hilarious 7-run 6th with 8 of the 10 runs he permitted during today's non-contest even more hilariously recorded as "earned".  The Reds, who actually held a 3-0 lead at one point, blew SIX x-plays altogether.

Game 4: Hipolito Pichardo, who has been a massive underachiever all season long thanks to a totally unwarranted frequency of gopher attacks, attained his best start of the season with a complete-game 4-hitter in Cincy's 8-1 victory.  The offense still LOBbed in double digits, but that failing was irrelevant for a change as the only SLN run scored on a gopher by You-Know-Who.  Pichardo has now permitted *30* gophers in just 104 innings, a slender TWO HUNDRED percent increase over his actual gopher rate in '98.  Six of Cincy's 13 hits were doubles, mostly on missed homer chances, the rest were singles.
