Subject: Reds @ Pirates

When it really gets down to crunch time and the season is on the line, the Reds unfortunately only know how to do one thing....

Game 1: CIN starter Tyler Green was cruising along with a 3-1 lead in the 5th which became 3-2 when he allowed a 1-out RBI single.  The next batter hit an easy DP x-grounder to Gold Glove 2B Bret '1' Boone.  Who booted it.  With the inning supposed to have been over, the next SEVEN batters reached base and the 7 runs which resulted made the difference in the 10-4 outcome.  Ironically the batter who hit the easy DP grounder was Pirate shortstop Tony '4' Womack, whose defensive work (unlike that of the top-rated CIN glove men) was nearly flawless, as he successfully converted 5 of 6 x plays in the series.

Game 2: A based-loaded walk issued by CIN starter Hipolito Pichardo to his .111-hitting counterpart led to 2 runs and a 3-0 lead for the Pirates in the 2nd.  Would those 2 gift runs be important?  Aren't they always?  Actually, Pichardo was then given a 4-3 lead to blow, which he did, but it was left to the Cincy bullpen to complete the choke, which they did.  Final score: 5-4.  Reggie Sanders provided 3 of our runs with a home run in the 4th inning, and that would be the final hit with RISP of the series for the entire Cincinnati team.

Game 3: Home runs accounted for all of the Cincy scoring in today's contest, and the Reds managed to eke out one more homer and one more run than the Buccos.  Final score: 3-2.  Brett Tomko got the win and recently reactivated closer Albie Lopez (the only habitual non-choker in the bullpen) earned his 12th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.  Bret Boone & Dmitri Young supplied the muscle for the Reds and Brian Giles gophered one for Pittsburgh.

Game 4: Desperately needing not to choke away yet another game, the idiotic Cincy manager turned to a rookie scrub (Scott Winchester) making his major league debut.  Surprisingly, Winchester pitched quite well (7 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER) but -- not quite so surprisingly -- the Reds found a way to lose.  Final score: 3-1.  Three errors combined with 100% more LOB than our opponent made it difficult to determine whether the offense or defense was more responsible for the critical choke.  Dormant for most of the game, the Reds got 2 RISP in the 8th (and didn't score) then loaded the bases in the 9th (and didn't score).  Winchester & Buddy Groom combined on the 4-hitter and didn't walk everyone in the house either, but the efficient Pirate offense turned their limited chances into enough runs to win.
