Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 24 (plus Week 25 CM)

In a matchup of two teams trying not to finish last in their division despite winning records, the Orioles won three of four close games at Fenway.

Game 1: BAA 7, BOA 5

Darren Bragg led off the bottom of the 1st with a triple and scored on a sac fly to give the Red Sox a brief lead, but Cal Ripken hit a two-run homer and Greg Myers followed with a solo shot to put Baltimore ahead 3-1.  In the 3rd, Bragg doubled and scored on another sac fly to bring Boston back within a run, and a 4th inning error by Rafael Palmeiro set up a go-ahead two run single by Boston's Mike Lansing.  John Valentin went deep in the 5th to make it 5-3.  But Baltimore rallied in the 7th. After a bases-loaded walk, Craig Biggio tied the game with a sac fly, BJ Surhoff singled to give the O's a 6-5 lead, and Palmeiro brought home an insurance run with another sac fly.  It took the Orioles four relievers to get through the last 3 innings, with Armando Benitez going the last 2/3 innings for his 22nd save. Scott Erickson got his 14th win of the season.

Game 2: BOA 6, BAA 4

Solo HRs by Surhoff in the 1st and Myers in the 2nd gave Baltimore an early lead.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Red Sox got a bases-loaded single from Mike Benjamin but only got one run as Surhoff threw Jason Varitek out at the plate.  Troy O'Leary's 4th inning homer tied the game 2-2. In the 5th, Mo Vaughn and Mike Stanley went back-to-back for the Sox, chasing starter Gabe White, and Damon Buford tacked on an RBI single for a 5-2 lead. Butch Huskey doubled in a run in the 6th. A fielder's choice and an RBI single by Mike Bordick in the 7th cut the lead to 6-4, but that was as close as they could get.  The game wouldn't have been nearly as close if the Red Sox hadn't managed to lead 16 runners on base in only 8 innings. Like Erickson in Game 1, Wakefield recorded his 14th win.

Game 3: BAA 5, BOA 2

This looked like a lopsided pitching mismatch, with Pedro Martinez on the mound for Boston with an ERA two runs below Orioles starter Charles Nagy's. But Baltimore drew first blood in the 1st as Biggio doubled and Surhoff singled him home, but that one-run lead disappeared in the 2nd on a two-run homer by Valentin. It reappeared in the 4th when Bordick hit a rare long ball for two runs. An RBI single by Surhoff in the 7th chased Martinez and put the Orioles up 4-2.  In the top of the 8th, the decision to pinch-run for the lead-footed Myers paid off, as replacement Damon Mashore beat a throw home to score on a Bordick double.  A 3-6-3 double play in the 9th helped Benitez notch save #23.  Nagy evened his record to 9-9.

Game 4: BAA 7, BOA 5 (10)

The first hit of the game, off the bat of Bragg with two outs in the 3rd, cleared the fence for a 1-0 Boston lead.  Jeff Conine tied it with a double in the 5th, leading to a surprisingly early hook for Boston's Pat Rapp; later in the inning, Jermaine Allensworth hit a sac fly to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead.  Todd Pratt added a two-run blast in the 6th. In the 7th,Ripken added a solo HR, but the run was matched thanks to a double by O'Leary.  Hoping to even his record, Orioles starter Curt Schilling insisted on pitching into the 8th but gave up doubles to Bragg and Benjamin. Reliever Doug Johns gave up another to Mo Vaughn, and two outs later a passed ball gave Schilling a no-decision and the Red Sox a 5-5 tie.  Both teams missed great chances to score in the 9th, sending the game to extra innings. Palmeiro came through with a two-out, two-run homer in the 10th, and Benitez finished out a strong series with his third win of the season.
