Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
After winning the series opener the Reds quickly achieve midseason form and choke away a pair of 1-run losses in our own well-established fashion.... Game 1: There was no scoring after the third inning in the Reds' 2-1 victory, the first of 3 straight games in which the losing team outhit the winning side. Mike Cameron, off to a wee bit of a slow start in 1999 (1 for 23), drove in the first run in the second with a grounder, the Reds donated a pair of walks and an error to St. Louis to tie the contest moments later, and Barry Larkin singled home the game winner in the third. Ron Villone was wild but generally effective in the win, the Cincy pen allowed no runs (!) and Jose Lima took the loss for the Cards, who amassed 5 hits to the winners' 4. Game 2: For the next 2 games the split cards, baserunning chances, and clutch hits went one way only. Sean Casey homered twice to help the Reds battle back from a couple of deficits and we had just taken Luckless Dave Burba off the hook in the seventh when -- who else? -- Scott Sullivan came on and delivered the first "Perfect Sambito" of the season: one batter faced, one game-losing gopher allowed. Final score: 5-4. The Reds got three baserunners in the 9th, but scored naught thanks to a timely low-percentage pickoff. Game 3: CIN starter Chris Holt was surgically bombarded for 6 runs and FOUR gophers in just 3 IP, but for the second game in a row the offense racked up a sizable advantage in hits and the Reds eventually clawed their way back from that 6-2 disadvantage and scored just enough to lose by the score of 6-5. Supersub Craig Paquette had 4 hits including 2 doubles and a home run for the visitors, but the difference in this outcome was a "high risk" baserunning play, when a Cincy runner had only a slender 90% chance of scoring, so naturally he was out. As further evidence of how the clutch hits went all week long, CIN pitchers allowed the rather large total of 26 runs in 6 games -- despite holding our opponents to a microscopic .205 batting average, though the slugging percentage was not so impressive (11 gophers allowed in 14 split card chances may have been the reason). |
