Subject: BAA @ SEA Week 3

(No new CM this week.)

The Mariners had hit an astonishing 31 homers in their first 12 games, but the Orioles outslugged them, winning two of three games with nine homers to Seattle's five.

Game 1: BAA 6, SEA 2

Seattle's Ken Griffey Jr. took Scott Erickson deep for two runs in the 1st, but Craig Biggio homered in the 2nd to cut the lead in half. Matt Williams (with a runner on) and Cal Ripken went back-to-back in the 3rd to put the Orioles ahead 4-2. One inning later, Baltimore's Kelly Stinnett joined the homer parade with a solo shot. That was all the scoring until Biggio doubled in a run in the 8th.

Game 2: SEA 2, BAA 1

The Orioles didn't get a hit off Seattle ace Randy Johnson until the 5th inning, when Mike Bordick singled -- and was promptly picked off (with a 95% chance of stealing if he got the lead.)  In the 6th, Griffey (with a 50% chance of stealing) wound up on 3rd thanks to a rare throwing error by Orioles catcher Charles Johnson; Harold Baines singled him home for the game's first run. Williams tied the game with a 7th inning homer.  The Orioles missed a great opportunity in the top of the 9th when Ripken drew a 19 on a split where 1-18 would have produced a go-ahead single... which meant that Reggie Sanders' HR in the bottom of the 9th was a walkoff winner. The Big Unit went the distance for his third win of the season, allowing only three hits.

Game 3: BAA 10, SEA 8

Sanders doubled in a run to give Seattle a lead in the 1st. In the 2nd, BJ Surhoff briefly tied the game with a long ball, but Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run blast to put the Mariners back on top, 4-1.  Roberto Alomar led off the top of the 4th with a solo shot; two outs later, Stinnett hit a grand slam off Freddy Garcia to give the Orioles a two-run lead.  As if on cue, Edgar Martinez tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.  For only the second time in the series, the Orioles scored in the 6th without benefit of a homer -- singles by Biggio and Brady Anderson and a sac fly by Alomar gave the O's a 9-6 lead. Again, the Mariners responded that inning, as A-Rod homered again for two runs. Ripken homered in the 7th, and for once the Mariners didn't follow suit.  The Orioles bullpen pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, capped by the first save of the season for closer Matt Mantei.
