Previous message                 Next message Message #: 36815 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Mar 2, 2017 Subject: Reds @ Expos The Reds continue to play way below their level of talent, losing a pair of close games in Montreal before winning what should have been a blowout in the finale....     Game 1: MON starter Dustin Hermanson had pitched miserably so far in 1999, but a dose of Vitamin C(incy) was all he needed to get turned around in a big way.  Hermanson worked 8 innings, allowed a mere 5 hits and 1 walk while fanning 10, and raised his record to 2-0 in a 3-1 win.  Ron Villone matched Hermanson in terms of hits permitted but the luckless Reds' hurler was defeated when the Expos broke a 1-1 tie in the 7th on a couple of singles and Villone's own timely error.   Game 2: The Reds blew a 2-0 lead and trailed 3-2 in the 9th when Doug Glanville came up with a runner on 3rd and 2 outs (the previous 2 batters having chosen to LOB that runner) and came through with a single to tie the contest.  But these are the Reds so a choke was not long in arriving.  A harmless 2-out bases-empty free pass in the bottom of the frame became not so harmless when a good fielding outfielder came up with yet another timely error to aid our opponent's cause, and the following batter sealed the Reds' unearned loss with a single.  Final score: 4-3, as the super-efficient MON offense LOBbed only 3 runners all day, and one of those 3 was a technicality as it occurred after the game had ended.   Game 3: The Reds amassed an early 9-1 lead at the expense of Javier Vazquez and stumbled from there to an 11-6 win behind the shaky pitching of Chris Holt.  Holt was doing well enough until HAL suddenly got surgical with the dice rolls and turned a 9-run lead into a 5-run difference over the final 2 frames.  The Reds collected 16 hits but Holt eventually hemorrhaged 13 himself before he was dragged from the mound, and reliever Denny Reyes got the final two outs.
