Subject: Reds @ Padres

Following Week 3's disaster, the Reds attempted to slowly turn the sinking ship around and record at least adequate results this week.  As a bonus, we discovered the newest heir-apparent to the late and unlamented Joe Sambito; the Arson Squad has a new leader....

Game 1: Cincy opponents seem to have a mysterious yet substantial talent for not stranding runners and getting all sorts of clutch hits; today was no exception and neither was game 2.  The Reds had hits & baserunners all over the place, a sizable advantage that mainly impacted only the LOB column (12-5).  After a surgical 2-out, bases-empty rally by the Padres against ridiculous underachiever Chris Holt which featured things like a bases-loaded walk to a non-hitting pitcher, the Reds eventually rebounded to tie the score at 4-4 in the 7th.

The deadlock remained even though Scott Sullivan took the mound for the Reds (delivering 3 IP with 0 hits!) and he was replaced in the 10th by new closer Scott Williamson who had yet to allow a single run so far in 1999.

That is, until his 3rd pitch to mighty leadoff slugger Quilvio Veras.  One batter faced, one gopher allowed, one game lost, one "Perfect Sambito" and one official initiation into the famed Cincy Arson Squad.  Final score: 5-4, and Williamson was not nearly done yet.

===================================================================================

Game 2: Another massive (11-4) lead in LOB for the visitors but the Reds held a 3-0 lead in the second (still LOBbing more than we scored) but the Pads quickly pecked away for a pair before CIN starter Pete Harnisch took matters into his own hands at the plate as well as on the mound.  Harnisch, now batting .455 for the season, supplied a brief timeout from the LOB-a-thon in the 5th when he smacked a 3-run homer off his own card and that became the exact difference in the outcome.  Final score: 6-3.

Harnisch recorded a complete game, thus giving the Arson Squad time to refill their gasoline cans, and raised his record to 3-0 as he alone among Cincy pitchers (and hitters) seems to be catching an occasional break in 1999 after his dismal 1998 season.  Matt Clement was the starter and loser for San Diego, while Scott Kamieniecki was the victim of Harnisch's blast.

===================================================================================

Game 3: Luckless Dave Burba had one of his better outings, being given an immediate 3-run lead and immediately blowing only 2 of it, and his teammates built up a 6-2 surplus with Burba still on the mound to open the 9th.  He had permitted just 5 hits and fanned 9 in the first 8 frames.

The bottom of the 9th, as so often happens in Cincinnati road games, did not start well (walk, double, single, shower time for Burba) -- and then, as so often happens, got much worse.  Scott Williamson came in and -- you guessed it -- one batter faced, one 3-run gopher allowed, and Burba's easy 6-2 impending victory was suddenly a 6-6 no-decision with still nobody out in the inning, and surely an impending loss.

But a couple of relievers who have yet to earn their 1999 arson credentials helped out, with Hector Carrasco (3-0, 1.06) getting the win and Denny Reyes (1.29 ERA) his first save.  The Reds eked out the win in the 12th when ex-Pad Ken Caminiti plated a runner from 3rd base with a single, despite RBIs in that situation normally being prohibited by club policy.  Final score: 7-6.
