Subject: BAA @ DEA Week 5 (plus new CM)

Cal Ripken had a three-homer day and Orioles ace Mike Mussina pitched eight scoreless innings.... and the Orioles still somehow got swept by Detroit.  "Somehow", in this case, means Luis Gonzalez.

Game 1: DEA 6, BAA 5
The game was scoreless until the 4th, when a sac fly by BJ Surhoff gave Baltimore a one-run lead.  Detroit's bats came alive for three runs in the 5th, with doubles by Damion Easley and Luis Polonia and a two-run homer by Gonzalez -- who did it again in the 7th for a 5-1 Tigers lead. In the top of the 9th, after Craig Biggio doubled in a run, Charles Johnson came through with a game-tying HR, his first of the season. But Gonzalez wasn't done yet -- he came through in the bottom of the 9th with a walkoff single.

Game 2: DEA 9, BAA 4

A error by seldom-used backup shortstop Dale Sveum helped the Tigers take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, but Ripken tied the game in the 4th with a two-run HR. Detroit retook the lead on the 5th as Gonzalez doubled in two runs and scored on a double by Tony Clark, who was singled home by Otis Nixon; Orioles starter Scott Erickson added a wild pitch to make it 7-2.  Each team scored a run in the 7th -- Baltimore's was on another Ripken homer, while Nixon's sac fly accounted for Detroit's.  In the 8th, an error by Biggio turned John Olerud's double into another Tigers run. Ripken went deep AGAIN in the top of the 9th, but once again the bases were empty.  In fact, Ripken's three homers were the only three hits allowed by Detroit's Hideo Nomo, who went the distance to improve his record to 4-0.

Game 3: DEA 2, BAA 1 (10)

Mussina and Detroit's Ryan Rupe squared off in a pitchers' duel that remained scoreless until the 5th, when a Will Clark double put the Orioles up 1-0.  That's where it stayed until the bottom of the 9th, when Orioles closer Matt Mantei served up a gopher ball to -- who else? -- Gonzalez to send the game into extra innings.  The Orioles loaded the bases in the 10th but failed to score, leading to the by-now-predictable walkoff single by Gonzalez in the bottom of the inning.

Gonzalez finished the series with nine RBIs, vs. only 6 by the rest of the Tigers' lineup.
