Subject: Reds @ Marlins

A massively underachieving team visited a massively overachieving one and balanced the scales a little bit -- but not as much as they could (and should) have....

Game 1: Cincy's clutch hitting being what it always is, the team was happy to take an early 2-0 lead with runs scoring on a passed ball & sac fly instead of requiring an actual hit.  Florida halved the lead in the 5th but Luckless Dave Burba, though not pitching very well (10 hits, 3 free passes, 1 wild pitch) looked like he might be able to wobble his way to the finish line.  In fact he fell over in the 8th, however his mates racked up 13 hits of their own and eventually plated some of them to pull away for a 6-1 win.  Hector Carrasco gave up nothing over the last 1.2 innings to earn his second save and drop his ERA below 1.

======================================================================

Game 2: The Marlins built a 6-0 lead against scrub starter Brett Tomko, then blew it -- only to discover just how very difficult it is to out-choke the Reds.  Tomko was roughed up for 5 runs in the 3rd during an incredible surgical split card rally, all 5 scoring after 2 were out and the bases empty.  The Reds immediately responded with 4 runs then took the lead at last in the 8th with a pair of runs.

Those 2 were given right back of course, but the Reds rebounded again with 3 in the 9th to take a 10-8 lead.  CIN reliever Buddy Groom, who was victimized in the 8th, wasn't done yet and he choked up 4 hits in the 9th to lose it by the score of 11-10.  The Reds thus chalked up 1-run loss #8 of 1999, a figure which to nobody's surprise whatsoever is neither exceeded nor even matched by any other team in the majors.

======================================================================

Game 3: With both teams' offenses apparently exhausted, this contest between Steve Avery and Alex Fernandez was scoreless through 6 innings.  Craig Paquette homered leading off the CIN 7th and the Reds later added one more.  It took Avery just 2 batters to tie score via yet another surgical split card resulting in a gopher, and here we go again.

No. 3 catcher Brian Johnson, who almost never plays because the Reds face about 1 lefty starter a month, pinch hit and supplied our second leadoff homer in a row (no split card required either time, fortunately) to give the Reds a 3-2 lead.

Scott Sullivan was summoned to blow the lead in the bottom of the inning, and got off to a typical start by permitting a surgical split card triple.  An extremely atypical thing followed, as he fanned the next 2 batters then ended the frame with a groundout.  The Reds added another pair in the 9th, which made Sullivan's rocky performance (single, double, wild pitch) in the M's half less stressful than normal.  Final score: 5-2, with Florida borrowing a page from the Cincy playbook -- please don't give it back -- and going 0 for 13 with RISP.
