Subject: Reds @ Cubs

The Reds entered the week with the most runs scored and fewest allowed of any N.L. Central team, yet thanks to our league-leading lucklessness are not residing comfortably in first place as expected but are instead struggling to avoid the basement.  This series nicely illustrated why that is the case, in a set of extremely low scoring affairs brought to you by the Reds' favorite split card number, 20....

Game 1: Chuck Finley's final start for the Cubs was a good one, but it never would have resulted in a win had his opponent been any other team.  Finley and reliever Jerry Spradlin got the Reds to reach double figures in LOB even after also inducing three timely rally-killing GIDPs.  Cincy outhit the Cubs and drew a ton of walks for a rare change, but in the only column that counts came out 3-1 losers.

Held scoreless into the 8th, the Reds finally notched the game-tying RBI before timely DP #3 occurred one batter later, taking starter Ron Villone (6 IP, 1 run) off the hook.  But in the bottom of the 9th closer Scott "Sambito" Williamson did it yet again, declining to retire any batters at all and allowing the game losing gopher to slugging outfielder Dave Martinez.

=====================================================================================

Game 2: In an incredible show of perseverance, the Reds endured 13 more LOB, three errors gifted to the Cubs and an onslaught of adverse split cards the likes of which have rarely been seen before in a single game.  Doug Glanville led off the CHN 9th with a double on a split of 19 -- just about our BEST split of the day -- and scored the only run in a 1-0 contest.  FIVE other times today a Cincy batter drew a 20, only because there are no higher cards in the deck.

CIN #1 draft pick Randy Wolf made his Smiley debut and tossed 6 scoreless innings with just 3 hits allowed, and came away with zilch to show for it aside from a nice 0.00 ERA.  For the second straight game the Reds batters, who are a distant last in the N.L. in drawing walks, somehow managed 7 free passes in order to maximize the LOB count.

=====================================================================================

Game 3: HAL rarely lets a series pass without adding to the luckless Reds' league-leading total of 1-run losses, particularly when a game was accidentally just won in that fashion, and today was the day for payback.  The Cincy starter was massive underachiever Chris Holt, who finally had a solid start (7 IP, 4 hits, 0 walks, 8 Ks) but it wasn't solid enough as the lone run he permitted was sufficient for defeat.  That run came in the 7th via pair of fortuitous split card hits, and the Reds simply can't compete with that.  Another day with the wind blowing in, another 1-0 outcome.

Though limited to 2 hits by a Cubs' pitching staff whose opponents were batting .302 and slugging .479 entering the week, the Reds still had more baserunners than Chicago but foolishly lost one of them in the top of the first when Glanville attempted to swipe second with the odds (theoretically) heavily in his favor.  What split did he draw?  What else? -- a 20 -- and the Cincy offense took the hint and made no effort the rest of the way.
