Orioles lose two of three in Boston.

Game 1: BOA 8, BAA 6

Boston starter Pat Rapp had allowed three home runs in 30 innings so far this season, but he matched that total in the 1st inning, as Craig Biggio, Cal Ripken, and Matt Williams went back-to-back-to-back for a 4-0 Baltimore lead.  It didn't even survive the inning, as doubles by Jose Offermann and Brian Daubach set up a game-tying Jason Varitek homer off Scott Erickson in the bottom of the frame.  When Rapp walked the based loaded in the 2nd, it looked like the fireworks would continue...but no.  Rapp escaped, and both starters held the score in check until Biggio's solo HR in the 7th. Again, the lead didn't last the inning -- Darren Lewis doubled in two runs to put the Red Sox ahead, and the Sox added two more for an 8-4 lead. The O's loaded the bases in the 8th but only got one run on a walk, leaving three on base for a total of 11 during the game.

Game 2: BAA 14, BOA 6

In the top of the third, a familiar sight -- bases full of Orioles -- was followed by an unfamiliar sight: timely hitting.  Will Clark, Ripken, BJ Surhoff, and Biggio all connected to put Baltimore ahead 5-0 and chase Boston starter Rolando Arrojo.  Reliever Pete Schourek fared no better, as he hit a batter to reload the bases and gave up a grand slam to Mike Bordick to make it 9-0. Nomar Garciaparra tripled and scored on a sac fly in the 4th for Boston's first run.  Surhoff homered in the top of the 5th.  Orioles ace Mike Mussina was cruising until the 5th, when Varitek and John Valentin doubled and Offermann tripled and scored on a groundout.  Just trying to get one more out to qualify for a decision, Mussina gave up RBI singles to Butch Huskey and Trot Nixon that cut the O's lead to 10-6.  Baltimore reawakened in the 8th with doubles by Roberto Alomar, Clark, and Williams that led to four runs.  Mussina got his win, but at the cost of almost a full run to his formerly majors-leading ERA.

Game 3: BOA 4, BAA 3

Garciaparra singled in two for Boston in the 3rd, and Offerman brought home another to make it 3-0 in the 5th. The way Pedro Martinez was pitching, that looked like plenty of offense.  But in the 6th, unable to execute a rarely requested bunt attempt, Williams took Martinez deep to make it 3-2.  Valentin's 7th inning HR provided an insurance run that turned out to be the difference maker; the Orioles had tying runners on in the 9th but got their only run on a double play.
