Subject: Reds @ Braves
After 6 weeks of consistent mediocrity against a mediocre schedule (against teams with far superior luck though), Cincy rises up to the level of our talent and pulls off the upset, taking a series from a team with superior talent and being separated from a sweep by one walk-off choke.... Game 1: Randy Wolf, making his second career start, was dumped in a hole in the second when a timely 2-out, bases-empty error by Gold Glove 2B Pokey Reese quickly became 3 unearned runs, but the Reds just as quickly stormed back with 5 runs (earned) of our own and vanquished ATN starter Tom Glavine. With an 8-4 lead in the 8th, CIN closer Joe Sambito Jr. tripled up one run and then, after 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th, managed to get the tying run to the plate before recording the heart-attack save. Final score: 8-5. Wolf (6.2 IP, 1 ER) went 1 for 3 at the plate and drove in 2 runs in the process of recording his first major league win. Game 2: Like Glavine, Greg Maddux (4 IP, 10 hits, but just 5 runs) was shown the door rather early, however Luckless Chris Holt was unable to take advantage and left on the short end of a 6-5 score after 5 innings. Craig Paquette's second solo homer of the contest tied the score in the 8th but Scott Williamson rose to the occasion again and nailed the coffin shut in the bottom of the 9th via a gopher to Chipper Jones. Final score: 7-6, league-leading loss #11 in the one-run column for the Reds. Game 3: John Smoltz was the next Atlanta starter and he turned in a creditable performance (7 IP, 8 hits, 3 runs) but was outpitched by, of all people, Brett Tomko (6 shutout innings, 0 walks, 7 Ks) a spot starter who entered the game with way too many digits in his season's ERA. Even so, Tomko's superb outing was nearly wasted when Dennys Reyes ran into immediate difficulty in the 7th and was tagged for 2 runs. Reyes escaped the 8th & 9th frames with considerable wildness but no hits allowed and eventually sealed up the 3-2 victory, creating a 1-run decision out of a 3-0 lead. The Cincy margin in the hit column (10-5) was far greater than in the run column -- and Tomko helped, with his batting line matching Wolf's from the opener, 2 for 3 with an RBI. |
