In a series that didn't feature much pitching, the Sox take 2 of 3.
game 1: Runs were scored in 5 separate innings soring 1,2,3,4 and 5 in that order. Not too often you are going to find that happen. Something else that you won't find too often. Boston loaded the bases in 4 different innings (including all 3 innings they scored). Boston seemed to have left their bats in Beantown to start the game as the first 4 batters didn't put the ball in play, getting k-k-bb-bb. Stanley finally put a ball in play and got an rbi double. A third walk loaded the bases but Valentin popped out. Lorretta reached on a 2 base error to open the Milwaukee first. Belle doubled him in and he came around on a wild pitch and ground out to give Milwaukee the 2-1 lead. Boston opened the 3rd with bb-1b-2b-hbp to tie the game and load the bases. A balk and a Varitek single brought in two more runs. Andrew Lorraine was doing well until the 6th when he found his 6-9 homer twice in a 3 batter stretch to give Milwaukee the 6-4 lead. Stayed that way until the 9th. When Garciaparra drew an 18 on his bp homer chance, the Sox were down to their last out. Daubach walked and Stanley singled to load the bases and Nixon worked yet another free pass to get Boston within one. Valentin wasn't about to be the goat with the bases loaded a second time and he fully made up for his first inning pop out by clearing the fence for a grand slam. Boston won 9-5.
game 2: Milwaukee wasted no time in scoring again in this one. A walk,stolen base, single, stolen base put 2 runners in scoring position. They came around on a ground out and sac fly. Boston tied it in the 3rd on a Garciaparra 2 run homer and they took the lead in the 4th on Encarnacion's sac fly. Loretta hit a 2 run homer in the 5th to put the Brewers back in front. Encarnacion responded with a 2 run homer in the top of the 6th to give Boston the lead right back. After 2 outs in the 7th, the Brewers got bb-1b-1b to tie the game. In the 8th, Milwaukee used a 2b and 2 singles to score twice to win 7-5. The Brewer 8th ended with a runner thrown out trying to steal 3rd base.
game 3: This one got ugly early as Boston reached double digit hits by the 3rd inning. With 2 out in the first, Garciaparra singled and scored on Stanley's double. Boston loaded the bases with 2 singles and an intentional walk in the 2nd but did not score. Sox scored 6 times in the 3rd on 4 doubles and 3 singles. They opened the 4th with 3 straight singles and scored 2 more runs and at this point had 9 runs and 14 hits to just 11 outs.Meanwhile Pete Schourek was near perfect through 3 innings, allow just 1 walk. Belle homered with 1 out in the 4th and that was followed by a single and double to cut the lead to 9-2. Rolen homered to lead off the 7th but Boston got 3 in the 8th on a single and a couple of rbi grounders. Vaughn homered in the bottom of the 8th to make it 12-4. Not done, Boston used a walk and 4 singles to score 3 more time in the 9th. With a big lead, Schourek was sent back out to rest the overused bullpen but that backfired as 4 of the 5 batters he faced reached. Lowe came on and struck out the first batter but Vaughn hit a 3 run double to make the final 15-7.
The Jekyll and Hyde Boston pitching staff has 5 guys with era's below 2 and 6 guys with era's above 5 and has exactly 1 pitcher between those 2 extremes (and he has all of 9 innings). |
