The unluckiest team anywhere turns what should have been a sweep into a series loss and awaits completion of yet another ultra-dismal week where pennant-winning talent gets expansion team results.... Game 1: League-leading one-run loss #12, in what could hardly have been a more typical Cincy game: Steve Avery & Ron Villone combined on a 3-hitter with Avery working on a no-hitter until 2 were out in the 6th. But even before that Avery was on the wrong end of a 2-1 score thanks to surgical wildness and his own costly 2-run error. Avery eventually permitted an earned run, but the undeserved tallies were the difference in the 3-2 loss. A theme of the series was the Mets dialing room service and promptly receiving timely GIDPs just when they needed them most, with 2 such occurrences today and 2 more in the series-ending loss. Game 2: Cramming what few breaks the Reds get in a month into one wasteful outing, a 10-1 final was the result. Randy Wolf went the distance and had one of the best starts of any pitcher in the league this season, scattering 6 hits and fanning 14 -- an N.L. high for 1999 (nobody else has even reached 12 in a game). Massively underachieving outfielder Mike Cameron supplied 4 RBI on 3 hits including a pair of home runs. Game 3: League-leading one-run loss #13, as the Reds batters played "roll the loaded column, find the out" to an extremely unhealthy degree against scrub starter Ken Hill, who had an excellent day thanks to all the breaks going his way. Cincy scrub starter Brett Tomko pitched as well or better than Hill, allowing just 1 solo gopher among his 4 hits in 6 IP. So it was left to closer Scott Williamson to do what he does best: coming on in the seventh and once again allowing the "Perfect Sambito" -- one batter faced, one game-losing gopher allowed. Final score: 2-1. CIN catcher Einar Diaz had an eventful day, facing 5 SB attempts (2 CS), getting 2 hits and scoring a run, but also hitting into timely rally-killing GIDP #2 of the contest in the 9th to seal up another luckless defeat. |
