Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 10 (plus Week 11 CM)

The Orioles went to Texas and pounded out 38 hits, including 7 homers... but still lost two out of three to the Rangers.

Game 1: BAA 9, TEA 5

The Orioles had a big 2nd inning, including an RBI double by BJ Surhoff and a three-run bomb by Mike Bordick, to take a 5-0 lead and chase Texas starter Aaron Sele. Only Jeff Conine's throw to the plate that nailed Juan Gonzalez kept Baltimore ahead in the 4th inning, as the Rangers roared back to make it 5-4.  The big blow was another three-run homer, this time by Ivan Rodriguez. Cal Ripken hit a solo shot in the 5th, and an RBI single by Todd Pratt in the 8th gave the O's a three-run margin. Rodriguez singled in a run in the bottom of the 8th before reliever Gabe White came in to stop a bases-loaded rally. Ripken and Matt Williams went back-to-back in the top of the 9th to give Baltimore some breathing room, enabling White to stay in the game and earn his first save of the season.

Game 2: TEA 13, BAA 8

In the bottom of the 1st, Carl Everett singled and stole second, enabling him to score the game's first run on a Kevin Orie single.  Orie subsequently scored on a sac fly by Gonzalez, and Rafael Palmeiro followed with a two-run homer to give Texas a 4-0 1st inning lead.  In the 2nd, Orie homered for two more runs, and an intentional walk to Palmeiro backfired when John Jaha singled to make it 7-0. Orioles starter Charles Nagy gave way to Kent Mercker, and Jaha took him deep for two runs in the 4th. The Orioles finally woke up with two outs in the top of the 5th, starting with an RBI single by seldom-used CF Gene Kingsale. After John Burkett issued a bases-loaded walk, Conine singled in two more runs, leaving Texas ahead 9-4. The Rangers added two more in the 6th as Palmeiro doubled in a run and scored on a sac fly by Jaha. Baltimore came back again in the 7th, with two-run homers by Craig Biggio and Williams to make it 11-8, but the Rangers countered in the bottom of the inning as Rusty Greer and Gonzalez each doubled in a run.

Game 3: TEA 14, BAA 4

The game started well for Baltimore as Williams singled in a run, but the O's left the bases loaded in the 1st. The Rangers fared better in their half of the inning -- after Gonzalez tied the game with a single, Jaha doubled in a run, Rodriguez hit a sac fly, and Palmeiro doubled in run #4. In the 2nd, F.P. Santangelo tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1, and the inning ended with Surhoff throwing Greer out at the plate. Baltimore got a run in the 3rd on a David Segui homer and another in the 4th on an RBI groundout. That progress was erased when Palmeiro singled in two runs in the 5th, followed by a bases-loaded Santangelo double that plated two more runs but saw Tim Boger get gunned down at the plate by Kingsale. Santangelo then scored on a single by Greer for a commanding 11-3 lead. Baltimore got a consolation run on a double-play out in the 6th. In the 8th, reliever Al Reyes put the exclamation point on Baltimore's dreadful pitching for the series by issuing four walks ahead of a two-run double.

For the series, Jaha, Palmeiro, and Gonzalez each went 7-for-12, combining for 14 runs scored and 14 RBI -- and that's not counting 5 more RBIs by Rodriguez.
