Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
The Reds make their first road trip to an N.L. West team which, although not a large factor in its own division so far in 1999, is having a significant effect on the N.L. Central pennant race (5-1 vs. CIN entering this series; 0-6 vs. PIN). Cincy racked up big advantages in hits & total bases and avoided registering a sweep only by having 2 high percentage baserunners gunned at the plate in consecutive innings in game 2.... Game 1: CIN starter Brett Tomko entered the bottom of the 7th with a 4-hit shutout, but left a few batters later having almost exhausted his narrow 2-0 lead, and reliever Dennys Reyes took care of erasing the rest with a surgical split card triple to the first batter he faced. Unknown reliever Mike Judd tossed 2 very effective innings for the Dodgers, following a similar pair from Dennis Springer, but Alex Ochoa finally launched his first home run as a Red in the 10th off Judd to deliver a 4-2 win. Game 2: The Reds outhit the Dodgers 12-6 and out-LOBbed them by exactly the same figures, wasting a quality start from Ron Villone and losing when ex-Dodger Reyes came up small for the second day in a row in another contest which went 10 innings. Reyes issued a walk in the 10th which was followed by 3 stolen bases but no run scored; it took a 2-out double to plate the losing run. L.A.'s Eric Young had 4 SB on the day, failing only once when he tried to steal 2nd, 3rd and home (on a busted squeeze) in the same inning. Game 3: Even with a 15-9 margin in hits and a mere 30-12 stomping by the Reds in total bases, the Dodgers still had more chances with RISP (16) and (of course) more hits in those situations than their guests. The Reds did most of their hitting in non-clutch situations as always but got enough of it, mainly in the form of 4 home runs, to cruise to an 11-6 win. Dave Burba took advantage of all that support to pitch a fairly lousy game. Buddy Groom, the lowest-ranking member of the Cincy Arson Squad, tossed 3 innings for the save. Even with a massive 11-5 lead entering the bottom of the 9th, he managed to get the tying run to the on-deck circle with just 1 out before inducing a game-ending DP. |
