Subject: Reds @ Padres

The Reds outhit the Padres 34-15 in these 3 games, but the efficient home team parlayed those 15 hits into 9 runs (exactly 3 each game) but still would have been swept had it not been for yet another patented Cincy choke in the opener....

Game 1: CIN starter Chris Holt combines a mediocre card with utter lucklessness, so it's no surprise that he entered this contest as one of the most underachieving pitchers anywhere.  What was quite a large surprise was that he had a no-hitter going after 6 innings today.  Back under the heading of "no surprise", his teammates had gotten Holt one lousy run of support, and he blew both the no-hitter and the lead in the 7th.

The Reds quickly regained that 1-run bulge so it was left to chief arsonist Scott Williamson to choke it away.  He accomplished that in the bottom of the 9th and then completed the task by serving up the game-losing gopher in the 11th.  Final score: 3-2, Cincy's league-leading -- by several miles -- 20th one-run loss of 1999.  The nearly-unhittable Williamson rarely permits a hit unless it's out of the park and this was his 7th in just 44 IP -- 0 of them off his own card.

Game 2: Randy Wolf wasn't very efficient at the plate (4 LOB with RISP) but did quite well otherwise, taking a 2-hit shutout into the bottom of the 9th before being ambushed for 3 runs.  Fortunately he was ahead by 6 at the time; final score: 6-3, as Wolf settled for a 5-hitter and fanned 8.  What turned out to be the winning runs scored off of the San Diego bullpen in the 7th on an RBI groundout which was followed by a 2-run single from Einar Diaz, who had 3 RBI on the day.  Dennys Reyes retired the final pair of Pads for his 4th save.

Game 3: SDN starter Matt Clement didn't retire even one of the first 6 batters he faced but still had 2 outs thanks to a pair of runners being gunned on the bases via typical Cincy split cards.  The Reds generously settled for only 3 runs in the opening frame instead of a lot more, but still built a 6-0 lead by the 6th inning before giving 3 back (1 earned) to make things more difficult for Ron Villone.

The Reds tacked on 5 late runs for an 11-3 win, with Villone and Scott Sullivan combining on a 4-hitter.  Three CIN batters (Dave Dellucci, Sean Casey, Dmitri Young) each accounted for 4 hits of the team's 18, with the massive (and massively underachieving) Young finally launching a couple of homers.
