Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 14

(No new CM for Week 15.)

Double-digit scoring in three straight games propelled the Orioles to a sweep in Milwaukee, although it took a huge 9th inning comeback to seal the deal.

Game 1: BAA 18, MLA 2

The game could hardly have begun better for the Orioles: single, walk, walk, grand slam by Cal Ripken, back-to-back doubles by Will Clark and Todd Pratt, and a 5-0 lead with 0 outs in the first. Not surprisingly, that led to an early exit for Brewers starter Steve Woodard, who was charged with a sixth run when Mike Bordick singled Pratt home. In the second, Baltimore loaded the bases again, and Pratt crushed another grand slam to chase reliever Juan Acevedo. Doubles by Geoff Jenkins and Dave Nilsson broke the shutout in the bottom of the 2nd, The O's had to settle for just two runs in the 3rd, as Roberto Alomar doubled in a run and scored on a Ripken single. There were sarcastic cheers from the remaining Brewers fans when the Orioles went down 1-2-3 in the 4th. Milwaukee's Fernando Vina got a solo homer in the 5th, his first of the season. In the 7th, Brady Anderson tripled and Alomar doubled him home; after a walk, Ripken hit another homer for three more runs and a 16-2 lead. The Orioles added a run on a double play groundout in the 8th, and another on a solo HR by Jeff Conine in the 9th. After Conine's homer, they loaded the bases for the fourth time before the inning finally ended. Pitching better than he needed to, Charles Nagy went the distance for the win, notching nine K's and evening his record to 6-6. Ripken wound up with eight RBIs for the game.

Game 2: BAA 11, MLA 3

In the top of the 3rd, Baltimore catcher Charles Johnson took Rafael Roque deep for two runs, and the Orioles added a third run on an RBI groundout. But the Brewers matched those runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Jim Thome hit a bases-clearing double off Curt Schilling. The O's retook the lead in the 4th, as Biggio doubled in a run; Alomar followed with a two-run single and eventually scored on a two-run double by Conine for an 8-3 lead. That lead grew to 10-3 in the 6th, thanks to a Matt Williams double and a sac fly by Conine. Williams capped the scoring with his 23rd homer of the season in the 9th. Schilling only allowed 6 hits in 7 1/3 innings while striking out 10, running his record to a remarkable 8-0.

Game 3: BAA 11, MLA 8

In the 2nd inning, Milwaukee's Bartolo Colon issued two bases-loaded walks to give Baltimore a brief lead, but Richie Sexson tripled in a Brewers run and scored on Bernard Gilkey's 4th homer of the year, giving Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. That lead grew in the 3rd, as Mo Vaughn singled in two runs, an error by Ripken brought another run home, Gilkey added an RBI single, and even light-hitting Rafael Belliard joined the fun with a sac fly that made the score 8-2. The O's countered in the 4th as Anderson singled in two runs and scored on an Alomar double; a groundout by Ripken brought Alomar home to cut the lead to 8-6. Both teams had many scoring opportunities, but the game was still 8-6 going into the 9th inning. In the top of the 9th, Charles Johnson came through with a big 2-run double to tie the game, and another 2-run double by Bordick put the Orioles on top. Anderson added an RBI single for a 3-run lead. The Brewers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th before two strikeouts by Orioles closer Matt Mantei preserved the victory.

Imagine what the scores might have been if the Orioles hadn't left 29 runners on base during the series...
