Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

Reds lose the one game which was somewhat close, win the other 3 by about 6 runs per game.  Mark McGwire kills pretty much everyone, but particularly the Reds (a mere 16 gophers & 28 RBI vs. Cincy in 1998, for example) however he thankfully did not make an appearance in this series....

Game 1: Eminently hittable starting pitchers Brett Tomko (7 shutout innings) and Jose Jimenez (5 IP, 1 run) battled almost to a draw before the Reds broke the contest open by turning 7 baserunners into 4 runs in the 8th.  CIN reliever Buddy Groom blew the shutout moments later but his team held on for a 6-1 win.  Each team collected 8 hits, with 5 of the 8 by St. Louis going for 2 bases.  Dmitri Young continues to slowly emerge from his season-long slump, and he notched HR #9 which gave his team a 1-0 lead in the 2nd that lasted until the 8th.

Game 2: Randy Wolf (7-1, 2.07) continued his outstanding rookie road season by tossing what should have been a shutout (1 run, unearned) in the Reds' 8-1 win against Donovan Osborne.  As in the opener, the Cards' lone tally came in the bottom of the 8th.  Four runs in the CIN 3rd gave the visitors a 5-0 lead and allowed Wolf to cruise from there, with 8 of the 9 Cincy starters getting at least 1 hit in the game.  Alex Ochoa (speaking of season-long slumps) homered, his second of the campaign, and Roberto Kelly led the attack with a pair of hits and 3 runs scored.

Game 3: Speaking of eminently hittable pitchers, St. Louis' Jose Lima was bombarded with singles today -- but had to deal with pretty much no power, no free passes, and no clutch hits whatsoever.  Chris Holt (6 IP, 2 runs, 1 earned) outpitched his mound opponent but suffered for lack of offensive support from his teammates along with some sabotage defense, and took a tough 3-0 loss.  Eleven was the unlucky number of the day, with the Reds collecting 11 hits, LOBbing 11 runners, batting 11 times with RISP and failing 11 times with RISP.  For the icing on his fortunate cake, non-hitting pitcher Lima went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double & run scored.

Game 4: Rebounding nicely, the Reds chased Omar Daal with a 7-run 2nd and then of course shut down the attack entirely, leaving it to Dave Burba to try, but fail, to blow the 8-0 advantage.  A couple of gopher bites ensued, but Burba survived them and registered a complete-game 8-3 win with 10 strikeouts.  #3 catcher Brian Johnson capped the 7-run outburst with a homer as the first batter faced by reliever Greg Swindell.  Todd Zeile doubled and homered for the Cardinals, with J.D. Drew adding a pinch-gopher in the 3rd which got his team on the scoreboard.
