Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 15 (plus new CM)

The Orioles went to last-place Toronto and got swept in a four-game series that felt even worse than it sounds. See end of e-mail for unbelievable stats.

Game 1: TOA 10, BAA 2

How to steal a run: In the bottom of the first, Toronto's Shannon Stewart was hit by a pitch, stole second (on a 55% chance), stole 3rd (again on a 55% chance), and scored on a wild pitch by Charles Nagy. Jose Cruz Jr. tripled and scored on a groundout in the 2nd, and Tyler Houston homered in the 3rd to make it 3-0. Toronto added two more runs on a Willis Otanez double in the 4th. Baltimore finally scored in the 7th, also on a groundout. The bottom of the 8th looked like a highlight reel for the Blue Jays, as another Otanez double and another Houston homer keyed a five-run outburst. The closest thing to an Orioles highlight was a 9th inning RBI single by fourth-string catcher Mike Figga, in his first action of the season. Toronto's Peter Munro went the distance for his first win.

Game 2: TOA 10, BAA 8 (15)

Undefeated Baltimore starter Curt Schilling dug a quick hole, loading the bases in the 1st to set up a 2-run double by Mickey Morandini. It would have been a three-run double, but Carlos Delgado was thrown out at home -- a baserunning decision that looked worse when Cruz followed with a homer to make it 4-0. Mike Bordick singled in a run for the Orioles in the 2nd, but homers by Stewart and Otanez in the 4th made it 6-1. BJ Surhoff went deep in the 6th to cut the lead to 6-3. In the 7th, the O's loaded the bases with no outs. It looked like the Blue Jays would escape when Cal Ripken hit into a double play that plated one run, but Will Clark followed with an RBI single and Surhoff homered again for three runs and a 7-6 Baltimore lead. That also, amazingly, took Schilling off the hook. But the Blue Jays weren't done yet -- two singles and a passed ball set up a clutch, game-tying single by Dave Martinez with two outs in the 9th. The tie wasn't broken until the 13th, when Will Clark singled in a run with two outs -- just when it looked like the Orioles were about to go scoreless in an inning where they'd stolen three bases. But again, the Blue Jays weren't done; a gutsy hit-and-run led to a game-tying RBI double by Cruz. Both teams loaded the bases in the 14th but failed to score. Eventually the Orioles ran out of pitchers, and a fatigued Steve Reed gave up a two-out, two-run walkoff homer to Houston in the 15th. Easily overlooked in the defeat was a heroic four-inning stint by Orioles closer Matt Mantei after he'd blown a tough save chance.

Game 3: TOA 11, BAA 5

Two-out doubles by Jose Canseco and Delgado gave Toronto a 1-0 1st inning lead, but it was quickly erased in the 2nd thanks to a three-run homer by Charles Johnson. In the 4th, the Blue Jays loaded the bases against Orioles starter Mike Mussina. After a sac fly by Otanez, the Jays took a two-run lead on yet another Houston homer. Stewart followed with a triple and scored on Canseco's second double for a 6-3 lead. With the bullpen exhausted, Mussina stuck around to give up an RBI single to Martinez in the 6th. In the 7th, the O's rallied for two runs to make it 7-5 but left the bases loaded. In the bottom of the 7th, with two out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the Orioles brought in lefty reliever Doug Johns to face the left-handed Houston, giving Houston an OBP chance of .102. As you might guess, it didn't work -- Houston singled for a 9-5 lead. Johns stuck around to serve up a two-run gopherball to Canseco in the 8th for the final margin. David Wells got the win for Toronto, while Mussina took one for the team and watched his ER jump from 2.74 to 3.41.

Game 4: TOA 5, BAA 4

Baltimore scored two in the 2nd on a Surhoff sac fly and an RBI single by Brady Anderson. Delgado's two-run jack tied it in the 3rd, but a sac fly by Anderson and a single by Craig Biggio put the O's back on top 4-2 in the 4th. In the 6th, Houston tied it with a two-run double and beat the throw home to score the go-ahead run on a single by Stewart. That proved to be the winner, as the Toronto bullpen bent (a lot!) but didn't break.

Tyler Houston through 41 games: .183 BA, 3 2B, 5 HR, 12 RBI
Tyler Houston in these 4 games: .444 BA, 3 2B, 4 HR, 12 RBI
