Subject: BAA @ DEA Week 16

(No new CM for Week 17.)

The Orioles padded their offensive stats and popped back over the .500 mark, sweeping three in Detroit.

Game 1: BAA 11, DEA 10

With both starters sporting ERAs around 5.00, this promised to be a high-scoring game -- and it didn't disappoint.  Brady Anderson led off the game with a homer off Brian Moehler to give the Orioles an early lead, but Sidney Ponson gave up an RBI double to Luis Gonzales, who scored on a Tony Clark single to put Detroit ahead 2-1.(Each team also had a runner thrown out at home on a 55% chance of scoring, so the 1st inning could have been worse.) In the top of the 3rd, after Moehler walked the first two batters, Roberto Alomar doubled in two runs to put the Orioles back on top. Not to be outdone, Ponson walked the first three batters to set up T. Clark's grand slam for a 6-3 lead. In the 4th, after Mike Bordick singled in a run, David Segui ended Moehler's evening with a game-tying triple and scored on an Anderson double to give the Orioles yet another one-run lead. This time Ponson waited an inning before blowing the lead, giving up a 3-run homer to Bobby Higginson; still in the 5th, Deivi Cruz added an RBI single for a 10-7 Tigers lead. Baltimore got a run back in the 6th on doubles by Segui and Alomar, but the next two innings were quiet. Then, in the top of the 9th, Cal Ripken homered to make it a one-run game, and Charles Johnson hit a clutch two-out, two-run homer to put Baltimore back on top for their fourth lead of the game. Reliever Steve Reed made this one stick to get his third win of the year, while Detroit's Todd Jones had his fourth blown save to drop his record to 1-4.

Game 2: BAA 11, DEA 3

Gonzales took Charles Nagy deep in the 1st for a quick Tigers lead. In the 4th, BJ Surhoff tied it with a single and Todd Pratt followed with an RBI double; Matt Williams followed with a two-run single for a 4-1 Orioles lead, although the inning ended when the usually reliable Craig Biggio hit into a bases-loaded double play. Higginson cut into the lead with a solo shot in the 5th, but the O's got that run back in the 6th when Segui tripled and scored on a sac fly by seldom-used Dale Sveum (his first RBI of the season.)  A three-run homer by Will Clark and a solo shot by Williams blew the game open in the 7th, giving Baltimore a 9-2 lead. Detroit's Gabe Kapler went deep for a run in the bottom of the inning, but Surhoff provided the exclamation point by going deep for two more runs in the 9th. Nagy only allowed five hits and no walks in 7 1/3 innings to improve his record to 7-8.

Game 3: BAA 9, DEA 6.

Biggio singled in the game's first run in the top of the 1st, and the O's added another run in the 4th on an RBI single by Segui. Ripken added a three-run jack in the 5th, and Biggio did the same in the 6th for an 8-0 lead. The still-undefeated Curt Schilling had a two-hit shutout through five innings, but with that big lead, he was pulled for usage reasons. And without recording a single out, reliever Kent Mercker gave up a two-run double by Kapler, a two-run triple by Travis Fryman, and an RBI single by Higginson to make it 8-5. Mercker departed in the 6th after serving up a gopher ball to Damien Easley that brought the Tigers within two runs. A solo shot in the 9th by Ripken gave Baltimore a little breathing room, and the lead held to give Schilling a surprising 10-0 record. The loss dropped Hideo Nomo's record to a still-impressive 11-3.
