Subject: Reds @ Pirates

You know that a season is getting down to crunch time when the Reds commence to choke, choke, and choke some more.  Which is exactly what happened in this crucial series against the #1 contender for the N.L. Central pennant: 3 chokes in our opponent's final at bat and 3 more 1-run losses to pad the Reds' insurmountable lead in that category.  The Reds also claim the related distinction of having the majors' worst winning percentage in 1-run games, with things hardly likely to improve as the games increase in importance....

Game 1: Pete Harnisch tossed 6 shutout innings for the Reds, walking no one, so it was left to the bullpen and home plate umpire HAL to erase the 1-0 lead and ensure defeat.  The pen combined for 6 free passes, 2 of which scored, and that was all she wrote in a 2-1 loss in 11 innings.  Cincy batters strode confidently to the plate 12 times with RISP.... and failed all 12 times.  Also setting a trend for the series, the Reds kept the LOB total from spiraling out of control by hitting into three timely rally-killing DPs.  The visitors' only tally came on a solo homer from Dmitri Young, who left the yard to no avail in each of the 3 losses in this series.

Game 2: The Reds had leads of 6-2 and 8-4 despite a bunch more LOB and GIDP before choking up 5 runs in the 8th and, thanks to 3 timely errors, suffering another unearned, undeserved 9-8 loss.  The always-helpful Cincy Arson Squad choked up a single, double, triple and pair of gophers during their surgical 8th inning dismemberment, but it was a 2-out error by Barry Larkin which plated the losing run; that plus home plate ump HAL calling the tying Cincy runner out in the top of the 9th.  The gopher permitted by ace arsonist Scott Williamson to the first batter he faced was not simply another in a very long line in 1999, but noteworthy as being the first off his own card all season, on which opponents were batting a robust .050 coming into the series.

Game 3: The Reds blew another decent-sized lead (3-0), had a decent-sized chance to retake the lead in the 9th by loading the bases with 1 out (the next batter -- you guessed it! -- hit into a DP) and Hector Carrasco (1.08 ERA entering the game) choked up the losing run with, of course, 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.  Final score: 5-4.  PIN scrub starter Carlton Loewer, against whom the league was batting a mere .346 and slugging over .500, picked the ideal time to have a quality start and hold the Reds to 5 hits in 6 IP while "loewering" his ERA to 7.38 in the process.

Game 4: The Cincy offense was LOBbing and GIDPing on all cylinders again, giving Ron Villone as little as possible to work with.  Sure enough, he eventually lost his slender 1-0 lead in the 6th but the Reds got it right back in the 7th and held on for a 5-1 win thanks to 3 more late runs.  Williamson not only had a good outing for a change with 3 shutout relief innings, but he drew a bases-loaded walk to provide valuable insurance against the likely choke which fortunately never came.  Alex Ochoa suffered a dizzy spell in the 7th when he mistakenly entered the game at the wrong position (catcher), then found his way to his customary outfield position and provided further anti-choke insurance with a solo homer.
