Subject: Reds @ Cubs

Unable to stand the prosperity of a sudden 8 game bulge in the N.L. Central, the Reds shifted quickly into reverse before finally jamming the transmission back into neutral by series end....

Game 1: The Reds had hits galore (16) -- all 9 starters with 1+ and newcomer Griffey with 3 -- but had FOUR runners erased on the basepaths and that proved to be just a tiny bit crucial as the Reds blew a 3-run lead and choked up 1-run loss #26 (the Reds may get to 30 before any other team reaches 20) in the bottom of the ninth.  Final score: 6-5.  Brett Tomko blew all of his 5-2 lead in the 5th, the offense went on vacation for the rest of the day, but arsonist Buddy Groom sealed the defeat by facing 4 batters in the bottom of the 9th and somehow managing to retire 1 of them.

Game 2: Once again the Reds outhit the Cubs (8 of 9 starters with 1+ hit) and had more total bases, but THREE timely rally-killing DPs and our usual crackerjack clutch hitting turned what could easily have been a win into a 6-2 loss.  Randy Wolf went the distance and permitted the not-unreasonable total of 10 baserunners, but the Cubs showed their guests what a clutch hit looks like and plated 6 of those 10.

Game 3: A 6-run 5th for the Reds established a 7-1 lead, and Ron Villone held on for an 8-5 win with the assistance of 2 scoreless innings from Scott Williamson.  Villone was cruising along until his wildness helped load the bases for the Cubs in the 6th with 0 outs.  He almost escaped, but with 2 outs a surgical split card single got 1 run in and newly-acquired Tom Goodwin cleared the bases with a double on a similarly fortuitous split.  Williamson created a jam in the 9th and got the tying run to the plate for Chicago with nobody out, but he struck out the next 2 batters and retired the last one on a groundout.

Game 4: Griffey improved upon his 3-hit performance in the series opener by getting 4 today including his first N.L. home run as the Reds once again built a substantial advantage in hits (and a mere 23-13 in total bases) that turned out to be barely sufficient to win because clutch hitting remains largely a mystery to Cincy batters.  Final score: 5-4.  Yet another pair of surgical split cards plated a pair off Hector Carrasco in the 8th, but the tying run was nailed at the plate on one of our very few good ones.  Thus reprieved, Carrasco fanned the side on 1 pitch over the required minimum of 9 in the 9th.
