The Blue Jays were held scoreless for the first 19 innings and still managed a split at home vs. the Orioles.

Game 1: BAA 6, TOA 0

In the 2nd, the Orioles took a 2-0 lead on a solo shot by BJ Surhoff and an RBI single by Jeff Conine. An error by Toronto's Shawon Dunston helped set up an RBI single by Todd Pratt in the 6th to make it 3-0. The O's failed to take advantage of three walks in the 7th, but they had better luck when they loaded the bases in the 8th -- Brady Anderson came through with a two-run single, and Roberto Alomar added a sac fly. Baltimore starter Mike Mussina took a one-hit shutout into the 8th, when the Blue Jays threatened but left the bases loaded against reliever Gabe White. White stuck around to finish up the shutout in the 9th, as Mussina's record improved to 8-3.

Game 2: BAA 3, TOA 0

In the top of the first, Toronto outfielders Dave Martinez and John Mabry collided while chasing a fly by Cal Ripken. The result: A two-run, inside-the-park homer. An error by Blue Jays pitcher Pat Hentgen and a passed ball set up an RBI single by David Segui to make it 3-0 in the 2nd, although the O's left the bases loaded in the 2nd and 3rd. The Orioles offense went cold after that, but it didn't matter, as unlikely hero Sidney Ponson (ERA 5.20) went the distance for what was, surprisingly, the first complete game shutout for Baltimore this season.

Game 3: TOA 7, BAA 6

The Orioles left an astonishing 15 runners on base in this game, and that came back to bite them. A double by Will Clark gave Baltimore runners on second and third with no outs in the 2nd, but they could only muster one run on a groundout. In the bottom of the inning, Toronto finally got their first run of the series when Carlos Delgado took Charles Nagy deep. Blue Jays starter Peter Munro (ERA 6.70) looked surprisingly sharp until the 5th, when he left after giving up a bases-loaded walk to put Baltimore back on top. However, the O's again left the bases loaded, which hurt even more when Delgado put the Jays back on top with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame. The top of the 6th opened with four straight walks from Toronto reliever Tom Davey to tie the game, followed by a Ripken single to put Baltimore back on top 4-3. This time the O's didn't leave the bases loaded -- but that was because their half of the inning ended with a double play. Again, the Blue Jays came back in the bottom of the inning, as a Dunston triple was followed by RBI singles by Tyler Houston and Homer Bush that again gave the Jays the lead. Nagy left with the bases loaded, Mike Bordick tied it up again with a 7th inning double, but Houston homered in the 8th to give the Jay the lead yet again. In the 9th, despite a foolhardy steal attempt by Jerry Hairston Jr. that failed, the O's tied it up on an Alomar single. In the bottom of the 9th, they Jays quickly got runners on 2nd and 3rd. An intentional walk to Matt Walbeck worked, as Baltimore's Matt Williams started a crucial 5-2-3 double play. But Dunston came through with a two-out walkoff single.

Game 4: TOA 8, BAA 5

This time the Jays struck first, with Delgado hitting one out for two 1st inning runs. Todd Pratt's RBI double in the 2nd briefly cut the lead to 2-1, but Mabry answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. After an RBI single by Walbeck and a bases-loaded walk from Orioles starter Lance Painter, a bases-loaded single by Shannon Stewart made it 6-1 in the 3rd; it would have been even worse, but Surhoff threw Willis Otanez out at the plate to stop the carnage. Williams homered in the 4th to make it 6-2. That was all the scoring until Otanez jacked a two-run shot in the 7th. Biggio made the game more interesting with a bases-clearing double in the 9th off exhausted Toronto starter Steve Trachsel, who was denied the complete game but still got the W.

Left on base for the series, BAA 42, TOA 27
