Held scoreless for the first two games -- and hitless for the first seven innings -- the Orioles came back to split a four-game series at first place Boston.

Game 1: BOA 6, BAA 0

The Red Sox took a three-run lead in the 4th inning as Gary DiSarcina tripled and scored on a single by Jose Offerman, who subsequently trotted home on Trot Nixon's homer. And that was all the offense the Sox really needed. Boston's Pedro Martinez threw seven hitless innings before giving way to Derek Lowe in the 8th, who gave up two harmless singles. In the bottom of the 8th, Brian Daubach hit a two-run double and Dante Bichette singled him home for the icing on the cake. Martinez and Lowe combined for 12 strikeouts in the game.

Game 2: BOA 3, BAA 0

Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson survived a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the 2nd and a two-base error in the 3rd, and the 4th ending ended with Terrell Lowery throwing Jason Varitek out at the plate. But the Orioles offense was equally ineffective with scoring opportunities against Boston's Andrew Lorraine, ending the game 0 for 8 with RISP. So the game remained scoreless until Varitek hit a solo shot in the 7th. Daubach went deep in the 8th for two runs, putting the game out of reach. Tim Wakefield, who pitched 2/3 innings in relief, got his 10th win.

Game 3: BAA 8, BOA 1

The Orioles finally scored, on a first inning solo HR by Roberto Alomar, and they added two more on a blast by Matt Williams in the 3rd. In the 5th, David Segui and Mike Bordick hit back-to-back doubles, and Bordick beat the throw home to score on a Jeff Conine single; later in the inning, Conine did the same on a Brady Anderson single for a 6-0 lead. Mike Mussina's shutout bid was ended in the 7th, when doubles by Daubach and Nixon produced the first Boston run. Conine doubled in two more runs in the 8th, giving enough of a cushion that Mussina talked his way into finishing a complete game. He struck out 9 Boston batters, although the three double plays behind him didn't hurt either.

Game 4: BAA 6, BOA 0

Charles Johnson doubled in two runs in the 4th to put Baltimore ahead. The O's added three more in the 7th on a pinch-hit double by David Segui and a two-run Bordick single. Anderson tacked on a solo homer in the 8th. Used as a lefty relief specialist all season until this week, Baltimore's Doug Johns (3-0) proved surprisingly effective as a spot starter, allowing just two hits in six scoreless innings of work.
