Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
The Reds continue to stagger towards the finish line, as they and the Cards take turns beating the hell out of each other in this series. There wasn't anything remotely resembling a 1-run decision for the Reds to lose.... Odd-numbered games: Game 1: The Reds had exactly as many hits as the Cardinals but there was a huge gap in gophers and clutch hits as the Reds came out on the short end of a 12-5 rout. Starter Brett Tomko was destroyed (5.2 IP, 9 runs, 13 baserunners) and Scott Williamson provided comic relief (1 IP, 3 runs) while the Reds, though hardly lacking for opportunities, failed miserably at pretty much all of those opportunities (1 for 12 with RISP). Game 3: The Reds had exactly as many hits as the Cardinals but there was a huge gap in gophers and clutch hits as the Reds came out on the short end of a 10-4 rout. Starter Steve Avery was destroyed (3.2 IP, 6 runs, 3 gophers) and Albie Lopez provided comic relief (2 IP, 3 gophers) while the Reds, though hardly lacking for opportunities, failed miserably at pretty much all of those opportunities (2 for 12 with RISP and 14 LOB to SLN's 4). Even-numbered games: Game 2: The Reds chased SLN starter Omar Daal during the first inning (6 runs, 1 batter retired) and built a 10-0 lead which enabled Randy Wolf to fall apart during a 5-run 5th but still not be in any real danger of losing. Final score 11-6. Wolf otherwise was unblemished while Lopez worked 3 innings for a save prior to his game 3 disaster. Game 4: The Reds chased SLN starter Jose Jimenez after the first inning (5 runs, 3 batters retired) and built a 9-0 lead on the way to a 12-3 win. Dave Burba went the distance, permitting just 1 run until the bottom of the 9th and amassing 11 strikeouts. Mark McGwire homered for the 4th time in the series, approximately (if not below) his usual level of effectiveness against the Reds. Ken Griffey Jr. seems to be adjusting well to National League pitching. In his first 12 games Griffey is batting .462 and slugging 1.039 and has delivered 21 RBI in those 12 contests. |
