Subject: Reds @ Pirates
The Reds just barely achieved the minimal acceptable outcome against their top competitor -- a split -- though it did require an epic (i.e. "routine") choke in the opener, one-run loss #28, to avoid winning the series outright.... Game 1: The Reds handed the Pirates 2 runs via blown-x plays in the early innings and trailed 2-1 in the 5th when the Pirates had the bases loaded with 2 outs and at the plate was catcher Keith Osik -- a .137 hitter with 0 career home runs in nearly 600 AB. Do you really need more than one guess as to what happened next? That's right, the Buccos suddenly had a 6-1 lead. PIN starter Todd Ritchie had cruised nicely through the first 6 innings but never came out for the 7th. This enabled the Reds to flex a little muscle at last: Mark Guthrie was touched for homers by Brian Johnson (pinch hitting) and Barry Larkin to slice the deficit to 6-4. Then in the 8th against Dan Naulty, Cincy infielder Mike Mordecai -- a possessor of 1 career homer, and that 4 seasons ago -- delivered a 2-run blast to put the Reds ahead 7-6. Not as lucrative or dramatic as Osik's gopher, but just as timely. Matt Whisenant had tossed 2 scoreless frames in relief of Cincy starter Dave Burba, but he allowed a 1-out single in the bottom of the 9th and closer Scott Williamson was summoned to seal up the win. Do you really need more than one guess as to what happened next? That's right, it was "Perfect Sambito" time yet again and the Buccos suddenly had an 8-7 win. It required only one pitch. ==================================================================================== Game 2: The Reds wasted no time in pummeling Francisco Cordova and several relievers, scoring in each of the first 5 frames and building a 10-2 lead, but the Pirates were not about to give up. They tallied 3 times with 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th to make the margin an uncomfortably close 5 runs but there was little further action after that for either side. Final score: 11-6. Albie Lopez earned a 3-inning save in relief of Brett Tomko, allowing no hits or walks but still permitting a run on Ken Griffey's highly unlikely 3-base howler leading off the bottom of the 9th, which was followed by Lopez' own error. ==================================================================================== Game 3: Pittsburgh's Orel Hershiser, who entered this game with a 6.27 ERA, limited the top-hitting team in the majors to 1 safety in 7.2 innings. Although CIN starter Chris Holt also overachieved to some degree (7 IP, 5 hits) he was unable to compete due to receiving no support whatsoever. Final score: 4-0. Sean Casey led off the contest for the Reds with a single, and the team's next hit came with 1 out in the 9th. ==================================================================================== Game 4: The Reds broke a 2-2 tie in the 6th when Pokey Reese doubled with the bases loaded, but Scott Sullivan helped Steve Avery blow that advantage one inning later when the first batter he faced also doubled with the bases loaded. Continuing the theme, the Reds loaded the bases again in the 8th and got a pair of singles and a double to produce 4 runs and an 8-4 win. Taking no chances this time around, ace arsonist Williamson simply began walking everyone rather than suffer another gopher bite, but in the end he notched 2 scoreless innings while Blown Save Sullivan vultured Avery's win. |
