Sox had a chance to basically put Baltimore out of the running for the division title after winning the first 2, but then got hammered in the last 2. Had the season ended before game 4 of this series, the 1999 Red Sox would have the highest batting average ever by a player in SMILEY (Garciaparra was at .391 before going 0-4 which puts him at .387 and the record is .3878), and the lowest era for a pitcher ever in SMILEY, yes even topping the ridiculous 68 Bob Gibson season.
game 1: Baltimore used a walk, 3 singles and another walk to put 3 on the board in the 3rd inning. Hairston led off the 4th with his first homer and Baltimore looked on its way to a win. An rbi grounder in the 5th got Boston on the board and Wilton Veras hit his 2nd homer of the year in the 6th to cut the lead to 1. With 1 out in the 9th, Boston loaded the bases with a single, single walk. Bichette came up and slapped one through the drawn in infield to give Boston the 5-4 win. Lowe picked up his 31st save.
game 2: Pedro was not completely dominant (a season low 5 strikeouts) but allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. Meanwhile the offense went wild. 4 of the first 6 Boston batters singled and when Valentin walked to load the bases, Nagy was given the quick hook. Varitek greeted Buddy Groom with a bases clearing double and Boston was up 5-0. 3 singles and 3 walks in the 3rd produced 4 runs to remove any doubt about this one. Boston had their 3rd multiple run inning of the game in the 7th as they scored 3 times on 2 singles and 2 doubles. Lansing's rbi single in the 8th made it 13-0 and brought Rod Beck into the game. It took him 2 batters before he gave up a homer. Beck was pulled after a lead off walk in the 9th but that runner came around on an x play double to make the final score 13-2. Pedro improved to 20-2 on the season and his 7 shutout innings dropped his era to 1.55, just ahead of Gibson's 1.58 in 1968. In his last 7 starts, totaling 49 innings, Pedro has allowed 22 hits, 5 walks and struck out 72. He's allowed 4 runs with only 2 earned for an era of about 0.37
The difference between the first 2 games and the last 2 was night and day, as in the first 2 were played last night and the last 2 played today.
game 3: Boston used 3 singles to put a run on the board in the first inning. The lead lasted 2 batters as Biggio walked and scored on an Alomar double. Conine followed with the first of what seemed like 20 bp homers over the last 2 games and Baltimore had a lead it would not relinquish. Alomar homered in the 3rd and the O's got an unearned run in the 4th. Boston loaded the bases with no out in the 6th but could only score 1 run on a dp grounder. Stinnett and Anderson had back to back homers (Anderson's was auto the rest bp homers) and Williams and Segui had back to back doubles as part of a 5 run 6th for the O's. Boston made a late charge, getting 3 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to make the final score 10-6. The O's had 12 hits, 5 doubles (3 of them on 5-11 rolls) and 4 homers (3 of them on 5-9 rolls).
game 4: For the 3rd time in 4 games, Baltimore opened their scoring with a 3 run inning. A 2 base error and a passed ball made all 3 runs unearned. Brant Brown homered leading off the 2nd. Williams hit a 2 run homer in the 5th and Brown added an rbi double. Segui homered leading off the 7th to complete the O's bp homer parade. Boston put 3 meaningless runs on the board in the 9th to avoid the shutout.
