Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
An 11 game lead with 21 to play *may* be too much to choke away, but if any team can accomplish that difficult task it could only be the Reds -- and they're sure giving it a try.... Game 1: Randy Wolf had a fine start for the Reds, going 8 innings and permitting just 3 hits. However he was sabotaged for 2 unearned runs when the alleged Gold Glove center fielder for whom the team recently traded committed his 3rd blown x-play and 4th error in just the brief amount of time he's been a Red; rather odd behavior for a '1', eh? Despite getting the adverse result on a mere 11 of 12 split card chances in the first two contests, the Reds' batters battled back to tie the game but LOBbed far more than we scored. Then in the bottom of the 9th the Reds refrained from using ace arsonist Scott Williamson and instead turned to his predecessor in that department, Scott Sullivan. Sullivan proved he had not lost the knack, throwing just one pitch and -- you guessed it! -- one surgical split-card gopher allowed, one game lost and one more "Perfect Sambito" to add to the Reds' massive collection. Final score: 4-3, 1-run loss #29. =============================================================================== Game 2: Even though tossing a 4-hitter had been insufficient in the opener, Dave Burba and Hector Carrasco notched the second one in a row for the Reds.... and somehow managed not to lose! Final score: 2-0. The goat (one of them) of game 1 became the offensive hero this time around, as Griffey stole his first N.L. base and scored today's first run moments later, then supplied the insurance run in the 9th with his 48th homer of the season and his "114st" RBI. Carrasco permitted a leadoff single in the bottom of the 9th but escaped the impending disaster without further incident. =============================================================================== Game 3: The Reds become the first team in 1999 to reach coveted #30 in 1-run losses with a 6-5 defeat that was the result of a 5-run dismemberment at the expense of Cincy starter Brett Tomko which obliterated a 4-1 lead. The Reds outhit L.A. 9-7 but 5 of those 7 hits went for extra bases and two late rally attempts by the visitors were snuffed out by timely GIDPs. Griffey slugged home run #49 and Eddie Taubensee added another, but Tomko suffered 3 gopher bites and the 3rd one made all the difference. |
