The Sox begin to fade from the playoff picture ever so easily. game 1: Ray Culp and Fergie Jenkins match up in what promised to be a pitchers duel and they did not disappoint. Mike Andrews led off with a double, was bunted over to third and scored on a Carl Yaz sac fly to start the game. Jenkins would settle down and allow only 2 more hits in the next 5 innings before departing for a pinch hitter. Unfortunately for him and the Twins, Culp had his A+ game going. Culp allowed a lead off walk in the third and was working toward his 2nd no hitter of the year. Rod Carew led off the 7th with a single to right but was then thrown out trying to steal, so Culp faced only 1 over the minimum in his 8 innings. Boston got a little breathing room when Reggie Smith triple in 2 runs in the 8th and added another in the 9th. Lindy McDaniel pitched a perfect 9th to seal the 4-0 win. game 2: Carl Yazstremski hit a 2 run homer in the first to put Boston up early. Ken Brett then ran into trouble in the 3rd. A lead off homer by George Mitterwald and then a 2-10 walk to Bill Hands put him in a hole. THe next 2 batters made outs and it looked like Brett would get out of it with the lead intact. Tony Oliva tripled in Hands and scored on a Killebrew single to give the Twins a 3-2 lead. Boston regained the lead in the 5th, using 4 singles to score 2 runs. The Twins scored 4 in the 6th to put the game away, the last coming when Reggie SMith threw the ball away on a 1-10 runner. Boston scored once in the 7th to make the final 7-5 game 3: Boston used 2 singles, 4 walks and a 2b error to score 5 runs and chase starter Ken Holtzman in the first. Boston still led 6-2 going into the bottom of the 5th when Minnesota scored 4 times to tie it, the last 3 on a Killebrew homerun. Boston took the lead in the top of the 6th and Minnesota came right back and retied the game. Here the game slowed down considerably and Lindy McDaniel threw 5 shutout innings and HAL trotted out the entire Twins staff (all 9 active pitchers). In the top of the 12th, George Thomas drew a one out walk and when pinch runner Luis Alvarado tried to get a lead, HAL pulled Fergie Jenkins and replaced him with reserve infielder Danny Thompson. Thompson lasted exactly 5 batters, with 3 rolls on the pitchers card. The result........5 OUTS. That's right, two x plays for an out to end the 12th, and a 1-2-3 13th. Andrews lined out on a possible single on his card, Menke got a 1-4 (just missing an extra base hit at 1-5) and Yaz got a 5-9 for a groundout. Brant Alyea led off the 13th with a homerun off Frank Linzy, just the 2nd one he's given up in 66 innings. Boston has now turned 2 triple plays, thrown a no-hitter and lost to a non-pitcher. What else can happen? Mike |
