Sox go north of the border and split with the Jays, winning the middle 2 games.
game 1: Steve Traschel went the distance on a 7 hit shutout for the Jays. Brian Rose pitched well but was the victim of blown x plays and single through the drawn in infield. The Sox best chance to score came when Offerman led off the game with a "homer". Being a W he settled for a single. A single+error was followed by 2 singles, making the Jays 4th inning run earned. In the 6th Jays, got single,wp,single to put runners on the corner. What would have been a run scoring double play became a run scoring single, followed by a run scoring passed ball. After 2 outs another run scoring single made the final score 4-0.
game 2: 3's were wild in this one as the teams combined to score 3 runs in an inning 4 times (3 by Boston). Encarnacion and Sorrento had solo homers and Lansing an rbi single in a 3 run second for Boston. In the 3rd, Sorrento had a 2 run single and Eusebio followed with a sac fly. Eusebio added an rbi single in the 5th. Toronto got all their scoring in the bottom of the 5th. Delgado doubled in a run and Canseco followed with a 2 run homer. Oleary had a 2 run homer in the 7th and Boston put their final 3 spot up in the 8th. Lansing homered and Oleary and Merloni had rbi singles to finish the 12-3 rout.
game 3: One (actually 2 but the second one was devastating) intentional walk did the Jays in in this one. Varitek hit a 2 run homer in the 2nd to put Boston up early. In the 3rd, Hatteberg singled but was erased on a double play. Nixon doubled and Valentin was IW'd. Varitek followed with an rbi double before Oleary was intentionally walked as well. Lewis and Offerman then drew traditional walks to force in 2 runs before Discarcina had a clutch 2 run single. Hatteberg drew a walk to reload the bases and Daubach made up for his double play by doubling in 2 runs. Nixon followed with a 2 run single capping the 9 run inning in which 10 straight batters reached base (5 walks, 3 doubles and 2 singles). Varitek capped his big game with a 2 run single in the 5th as Boston cruised to a 13-0 win. It was so bad for Toronto that Rod Beck faced 4 batters and got them all out to lower his era to 8.71.
game 4: Looked the onslaught would continue for a 3rd game as Boston batted around in the first inning, scoring 5 times. Lansing homered to open the game. After a walk and out, 5 of the next 6 batters singled before Lansing choked in the clutch to end the inning. Delgado had 2 run homers in the first and third to get Toronto to within a run. Things settled down until the 7th. With 2 outs back to back doubles by Mabry and Bush tied the game. Discarcina's sac fly put Boston back on top in the 8th but Morandini's 2 out single tied it in the bottom of the inning. Toronto got a single and double to start the 9th. A couple short flies sandwiched a walk and it looked like Jackson might get out of it but he surrendered the game winning single to Dave Martinez. Toronto got the split with the 7-6 win.
