Subject: BAA @ NYA Week 23 (plus Week 24 CM)

A mere 11 games out of Wild Card contention, short of sneaking over into the AL Central, the Orioles had only one path to keep their faint playoff hopes alive: sweep four from the Yankees in NYC. And for three days, it looked like they might pull it off...

Game 1: BAA 8, NYA 6

The series began auspiciously for Baltimore, as Brady Anderson led off the game with a double and Roberto Alomar followed with a two-run homer. One out later, Cal Ripken hit a solo shot. After a single and a walk, Yankees starter Hideki Irabu was yanked with only 1/3 IP. in favor of Ramiro Mendoza -- who served up a three-run gopher ball to Brant Brown. In the 4th, the Orioles got another Alomar homer and an RBI single by David Segui, but Greg Vaughn put the Yankees on the board with a three-run homer that made it 8-3. The Yankees battled back in the late innings. In the 8th, Chuck Knoblauch tripled and scored on a groundout. A two-run Tony Graffanino double in the 9th brought the Yankees within two runs, and they got the tying runs on base before Paul O'Neill made the last out. The win went to Sidney Ponson, who gave up four runs in 7 2/3 innings on only four hits.

Game 2: BAA 7, NYA 5

In the top of the first, Jeff Conine singled in a run, Matt Williams followed with a sac fly, and Brook Fordyce doubled in a run; Brady Anderson capped the rally with an RBI single for the fourth Orioles run. However, Vaughn answered with a two-run shot for a 4-2 first inning score. In the 3rd, Fred McGriff tied the game with a double, but was caught off 2nd on the old hidden ball trip to end the Yankees' rally. After a triple by Terrell Lowery, Brown's sac fly put the Orioles back up briefly in the 4th, but it lasted just one batter, as Tino Martinez tied it again with a solo HR. There was no more scoring until Baltimore got two decisive runs in the 8th, when Segui doubled in a run and Brown singled him home. Newly acquired Will Cunnane got the win after pitching 3 2/3 perfect innings of relief.

Game 3: BAA 16, NYA 4

The Orioles batted around in the 1st inning, and singles by Fordyce, Charles Johnson, Mike Bordick, and Alomar drove in a combined 6 runs and sent New York starter Andy Pettitte to the showers. In the 3rd, Bordick singled, stole second on a failed hit-and-run, and beat the throw home on Gene Kingsale's single; Single scored on an Alomar single, Alomar scored on a Brown single, and Brown trotted home on a three-run bomb by Matt Williams that gave Baltimore a 12-0 lead. In the 4th, Bordick singled in another run, but for the third straight game Vaughn homered for the Yankees' first two runs. Baltimore countered in the 5th with an RBI single by Johnson and a two-run Bordick double. Orioles starter Mike Mussina (11-3) cruised into the 6th with a three-hitter, but left with the bases loaded and no outs. However, all the Yankees could muster that inning was one run on a sac fly by McGriff, and their last run scored in the 9th on an RBI groundout.

Game 4: NYA 13, BAA 0

This time it was the Yankees who put up a crooked number in the 1st, scoring three runs on singles by O'Neill and Bernie Williams and a sac fly by McGriff. It was 5-0 after Derek Jeter doubled in two runs in the 4th, and McGriff singled in another run in the 5th. Baltimore starter Scott Erickson gave way to Cunnane in the 6th, but his magic from Game 2 had worn off -- Jeter took him deep for three, and another sac fly by McGriff and a Vaughn single pushed the score to 11-0. McGriff homered and Knoblauch singled in another run to close out the scoring in the 8th. Orlando Hernandez went the distance for a 5-hit shutout, running his record to 17-4.
