Subject: Reds @ Giants

The Pirates are *probably* going to run out of time to catch the Reelin' Reds, but the boys from Cincinnati remain in full choke mode -- blowing a 4-run lead in the opener, chalking up 1-run loss #31 in the middle game, and #32 in the finale after scoring 5 runs in the top of the first and blowing it all, and more, even before the second inning was complete....

Game 1: Reliever Hector Carrasco made his first start of the season and was given a 4-0 lead, then we found out the hard way where Carrasco's endurance limit is when HAL surgically dismembered him for 5 runs in the 4th after three scoreless innings.  The Reds dug the hole deeper by donating an unearned run in the 6th on back-to-back errors, but Ken Griffey Jr. turned it around with a 3-run homer in the the Cincy 7th.

When Dennys Reyes allowed a leadoff gopher in the bottom of the 9th to pull the Giants within a run, Scott Williamson was summoned to see how quickly he could blow the game, and although he immediately headed in that direction (single, single), he kept his beloved pet gopher chained up for a rare change and escaped with an 8-7 win.  Russ Branyan notched career home run #1 in his first at bat of the day.

==================================================================================

Game 2: Brett Tomko was cruising along with a 2-0 lead in the 5th, having tied a major league record two frames earlier (9 pitches, 3 strikeouts) but a fluke gopher by lightweight catcher Jorge Fabregas erased that lead and Tomko gave up 2 more runs in the 6th and left with a loss being imminent.  But the Reds, who had made SFN starter Miguel Batista and his .312 opponent batting average look like an All Star all day long, rallied to tie it up in the 8th just so they could blow it and lose by one -- a feat accomplished moments later in the bottom of the inning thanks to a trio of free passes by Albie Lopez, the final gift coming with the bases juiced.  Final score: 5-4.

==================================================================================

Game 3: Randy Wolf has been a fortunate pitcher for the Reds this season, in terms of getting sizable offensive support on many occasions.  His team scored 10 times today; it wasn't enough.  The Reds chased Russ Ortiz before he could get out of the first inning, a Dmitri Young grand slam doing the honors.  Wolf, having retired just 1 batter in the bottom of the first, choked up a 3-run gopher and then suffered another pair of bites good for 3 critical unearned runs in the 2nd after another error extended the inning past the customary 3 outs.

The Cincy bullpen was sadly as effective as ever in the middle innings (Scott Sullivan being credited with blown save #5 and loss #5 as a reward for his dismal showing) while the offense was busy hitting into 2 timely rally-killing DPs and failing *13* times with runners in scoring position.  Craig Paquette's RBI single in the 8th shaved San Fran's lead down to a single run, which of course is the margin where the Reds are more likely to lose than any other team, and they went down 1-2-3 in the 9th to prove it once again.  Final score: 11-10.
