Subject: BAA @ MNA Week 24 (plus Week 25 CM)

Despite not holding a lead after any of the first 29 innings, the Orioles salvaged one win in a three-game series in Minnesota.

Game 1: MNA 5, BAA 3

Doug Mientkiewicz doubled and scored on a Terry Steinbach single to give the Twins the game's first run in the 2nd, and Todd Walker added another with an RBI double in the 3rd. The damage could have been worse if Twins rallies hadn't ended with a putout at the plate in the 2nd and a caught stealing in the 6th.  Minnesota starter Jason Ryan didn't allow a hit until the 5th, but he was yanked in the 6th after Terrell Lowery singled to make it 2-1. However, in the bottom of the inning, Mientkiewicz doubled in a run and Steinbach tripled him home , then scored on a Jacque Jones double for a 5-1 lead. A two-out, two base 7th inning error by Fernando Tatis helped the Orioles get back in the game with two unearned runs, and they stayed in it when the old "intentional walk with one out and a runner on third to set up a double play" ploy actually worked for once in the bottom of the 8th, but the Twins bullpen held to give Ryan the win.

Game 2: MNA 7, BAA 2

Orioles starter Sidney Ponson served up gopher balls to the first two batters he faced, Jones and Matt Lawson, and Jones touched him up again in the 3rd for a 3-0 Twins lead. In the 5th, Baltimore got two runs when Brady Anderson singled in a run, stole second, and came home on a Lowery single, while Ponson held Jones to just a double that time. In the 6th, Todd Walker tripled and scored on a single by Tatis, followed one out later by Tony Batista's two-run homer for a 6-2 advantage. The Twins tacked on one more run with Marty Cordova's 8th inning homer.

Orioles pitchers only allowed nine hits and zero walks, which don't usually lead to seven runs.. except when five of those hits leave the yard.

Game 3: BAA 9, MNA 4 (12)

Miguel Cairo singled in a run in the 1st for the Twins. In the 2nd, the Orioles took a brief 2-1 lead on RBI singles by Brook Fordyce and Jerry Hairston Jr., but Javier Valentin tied it with a single in the bottom of the inning. A steal by Batista set up Ron Coomer's go-ahead sac fly in the 4th, and Tatis doubled in a run in the 5th for a 4-2 Minnesota lead. After Craig Biggio's 6th inning homer brought the O's within a run, they loaded the bases in the 7th but only managed one run on Matt Williams's pinch-hit single. Victory looked certain for the Twins when Chad Allen led off the bottom of the 9th with a triple, but  a critical 3-2-3 double play helped the Orioles bullpen escape into extra innings. With two outs in the top of the 12th, Anderson beat the throw home on a Jeff Conine single, and an intentional walk to Roberto Alomar set up a bases-clearing double by Charles Johnson, who scored on a two-base Corey Koskie error to give Baltimore an insurmountable five-run lead. It was a true team effort -- by game's end, fourteen different Orioles notched either a hit or a run.
