Subject: Reds @ Cubs

The Reds treated this meaningless series as such, practicing good habits for the playoffs such as hitting into DPs at every opportunity, choking all over the place in clutch situations (offensively and defensively) and getting bitten by as many gophers as possible....

Game 1: Cincy starter Jim Brower got a rude welcome to the major leagues, giving up 4 runs and 2 gophers in the very first inning -- all runs being unearned thanks to a pair of timely errors by his teammates.  CIN batters struck out 11 times, probably all 11 with a runner at third base and less than 2 outs, as the Reds settled for an unearned 7-5 loss.  Brower had the distinction of surrendering Corkin' Sammy's 70th home run of the season as part of his first-inning initiation ritual.

Game 2: The first run of today's game was also donated by the Reds' defense, and that was all CHN starter Jon Lieber would need (though he got two more) to sail to an easy 3-0 win over the #1 offense in the league.  The Reds' sizable 9-3 lead in the LOB category foreshadowed the outcome and helped saddle Dave Burba (7 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 Ks) with a tough loss.

Game 3: The bright spot for the Reds, as two virtually unknown players had excellent days and led the visitors to a 6-3 win.  The complete-game victory went to Mac Suzuki, who was making his first career start; he is expected to be a significant contributor to the 2000 Reds' starting corps (which tells you something about the kind of rotation we're likely to have).  Catcher Jason Larue went 1 for 1 in 4 plate appearances and his lone at bat was a home run.  The Reds kept the game close by aborting numerous (3) rallies with DPs.

Game 4: The customary season-ending bench-emptier which featured 7 pitchers used by the Reds; 4 were effective, 3 suffered fatal gopher bites.  Larue, looking like the best hitting Cincy catcher since Johnny Bench, had 2 hits including another homer and raised his average to .462.  Trailing 7-2 after 8 innings, the Reds decided not to go down without a struggle and staged a furious comeback that included 3 doubles, a single and a hit batter.

The tying run in this critical contest was just 90 feet away, there were 2 outs.... would Barry Larkin rise to the occasion?  Bill Simas took a deep breath, delivered, Larkin swung, a split card was drawn....

Yes!!!

Larkin grounded out weakly, and the Reds had done it -- 1-run loss #34 of the season!  The #2 team in that category likely won't even reach 25; now that's some major domination.
