Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 25

Coming into Week 25, Baltimore was theoretically still in the playoff hunt. All they needed was to win all seven games, plus have the Yankees go 0-7, *plus* having both Kansas City and Seattle go 2-5 or worse.
And the Orioles came through with a four-game road sweep of first-place Boston.
"So you're saying... there's... a chance..."

Game 1:  BAA 7, BOA 3

Cy Young frontrunner Pedro Martinez squared off against Baltimore ace Mike Mussina. A two-out error by Nomar Garciaparra helped the Orioles score two unearned first-inning runs, but Paul Sorrento took Mussina deep in the 2nd to cut the lead to 2-1. The O's loaded the bases in the 6th but could only muster one run on a sac fly by Todd Pratt. In the 7th, after Sorrento singled in a run, the Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs. Mussina gave way to reliever BJ Ryan, who threw a game-tying wild pitch before somehow escaping the inning with no further damage. Baltimore retook the lead in the 8th on a pinch-hit double by Terrell Lowery and added three more runs in the 9th on homers by Wil Cordero and Mike Bordick. Both aces wound up with a no-decision; Ryan got the win for an improbable 4-0 record.

Game 2: BAA 7, BOA 3

Again, it was a Garciaparra error in the 1st that plated the first Orioles run, followed by a Mike Stanley error on a Craig Biggio single to make it 2-0. In the 2nd, Baltimore's David Segui homered, but Trot Nixon hit a two-run shot to bring Boston within a run. A Bordick homer and an RBI single by Brady Anderson gave the Orioles a 5-2 lead  in the 4th. Boston's Juan Encarnacion hit a solo shot in the 6th, which Matt Williams answered in the top of the 8th. Anderson' s solo HR in the 9th gave the game a final score identical to Game 1. Scott Erickson (11-12) got the win.

Game 3: BAA 5, BOA 4

Garciaparra produced the first run again, but this time it was an RBI single that gave Boston a 1-0 lead in the 3rd. Brant Brown tied it with a 4th inning double, Aggressive baserunning in the 7th helped the Orioles take a 3-1 lead on a sac fly by Biggio and a wild pitch, quickly cut to one run when Troy O'Leary homered in the bottom of the frame. Brought into the game as a defensive replacement, seldom-used catcher Kelly Stinnett hit a two-run homer in the 8th for a 5-2
Orioles lead. Jason Varitek made it 5-3 with a single in the bottom of the inning, but the Sox left the bases loaded -- as they did in the 9th after a sac fly by Wilton Veras brought them within a run. Boston outhit the O's 13-7, but they left 14 runners on base. The win brought Sidney Ponson's record to 12-11.

Game 4: BAA 4, BOA 1

Once more Garciaparra started the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st. Baltimore loaded the bases in the 2nd and 3rd with nary a run to show for it. But in the 5th, with Roberto Alomar on 1st, Biggio doubled, and O'Leary's errant score allowed both Alomar and Biggio to score for a 2-1 Orioles lead. Baltimore added an unlikely run in the 6th on Ryan Minor's first MLB homer, and another in the 7th on a Brook Fordyce double. With the Orioles bullpen fatigued, starter Curt Schilling stayed in until the 9th, improving his record to 12-2. Ryan earned his first save.

Now all we need is for at least 20 other games to play out perfectly in our favor, and we'll face the Yankees in a one-game playoff!
