JULY 21 Willie McCovey cracked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the strong San Francisco Giants destroyed the New York AL Yankees by a score of 14 to 2 at Candlestick Park. McCovey was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed their appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 5th inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his 34th of the season) in the 8th inning. San Francisco simply wore out the New York AL pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings. The victory went to Hal Brown(9-2) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Brown was helped out by Bobby Bolin who recorded his 4th save. Jim Bouton(12-4) took the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 4 innings. 'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' McCovey said 'next time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'
