Subject: Twins @ A's
The Twins went out the west coast for the last time of 1970 for a very important series with the never say die A's. The Twins were hoping to take advantage of the fact that they had won 11 of their last 12 games and put some distance between them and the A's as this season long pennant race goes into the home stretch. The two teams would once again split a four game series. One note: despite ever annoying pleas, Danny Thompson was not allowed to pitch. Game One: Twins 7 A's 2 Jim Perry scattered 8 hits over 7 innings to win his 20th.Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew each hit homers to lead the offense. Rick Monday - great saver of the American Flag - went 4 for 4 for the A's. Game Two: Twins 6 A's 5 The A's got off to a 5-1 lead as they sent Fergie Jenkins to an early shower. But, Blue Moon Odom and Diego Segui could not hold the lead as the Twins went up 6-5 in the seventh. Twin relievers Tom Hall and Ron Perranoski shut the A's down over the last four innings as Hall gains his 6th win, and Perranoski gets his 21st save. The A"s were victimized by terrible fielding in this one as they made 4 errors. This is a game, that if the Twins win the division by a game or two, they will look back and realize luck was on their side this year. The A's usually play much better against the Twins then they did in this one. Game Three: A's 10 Twins 3 This one was all A's as Twin starter Bill Hands was gone by the 4th inning - on his way to his 13th loss. Meanwhile, Andy Messersmith pitched well in a complete game effort to gain his 13th win. Andy also helped his cause by knocking in two runs with a 2 for 4 effort at the plate. Joe Rudi had 4 RBI for the A's as well. Game Four: A's 4 Twins 3 The A's special pitcher for games against Minnesota only - Vida Blue - once again provides the A's with 7 solid innings to go to 4-0. If the A's ever bring this kid up for a whole season, he is sure to win 20. The Twins almost make a grand comeback in the ninth, but come up a run short. This game was frustrating for the Twins as they had chances to put more runs on the board, but failed to execute sacrafices, squeeze plays, etc. Also, the Twins manager Rick Ramacier made some questionable moves in hindsight. If the Twins finish one game out of first, this game will provide future nightmares. |
