Subject: Reds @ Pirates

Game 2: With HAL umpiring at some other base today Cincy's Mac Suzuki and Felix Heredia combined to walk nobody, while Pete Harnisch got his first start for the Pirates and, since he was facing his ex-teammates, it was undoubtedly one of the best he will have this season.  Harnisch permitted 2 runs in the first 3 innings but had a quality start and Pittsburgh once again got just about perfect relief, but Suzuki/Heredia were a little better.  Final score: 2-1.

Suzuki had a shutout until the 8th when Adrian Brown delivered his second key hit in 2 games to cut the Cincy lead to a single run, and when Brian Giles doubled in the 9th Heredia was summoned to record the final 2 outs -- which he did!  The difference in the contest turned out to be Pokey Reese's first homer of the season, a solo drive in the 3rd.  Suzuki, whose first and only career start was a complete game win in 1999, was likewise impressive on this day (8.1 IP, 7 hits, 0 BB, 4 K).

==============================================================================================

Game 3: As in game 1 the Reds built a sizable lead and once again found themselves having to try to hold on for dear life -- but this time Williamson, though shaky as always despite his great card, nailed down the win after his teammates blew a golden opportunity in the top of the 9th.  Final score: 6-4.

Albie Lopez, who had pitched 85 games in relief since his last start 6 seasons ago, joined the CIN rotation for 2000 and his first outing was successful albeit significantly hittable (6 IP, 9 hits but only 1 walk & 2 runs); 3 timely DPs helped his cause (the Reds hit into 2 themselves to generously balance the scales).  Scott Sullivan displayed his arsonist credentials as the dice zeroed in on the hits when he took over in the 7th and got Pittsburgh back in the game.

Moments after Sullivan was assaulted for 2 runs in the PIN 8th, the Reds loaded the bases with 0 outs and eked out a single insurance run off Curt Leskanic before Troy Percival strode to the mound, threw 9 pitches and blew away Sean Casey, Raul Mondesi & Dave McCarty with 3 strikeouts as the bases remained loaded.

Adrian Brown, again a nemesis for the Reds, came to the plate as a pinch hitter with 26 outs having been recorded, but all he could do this time was draw a walk which brought the tying run to the plate.  With Fernando Vina next at the plate, and probably a 90% chance of a gopher given the situation and opponent (Vina's lack of power notwithstanding), Williamson averted another dramatic conclusion with a mundane groundout.

For a series in which the Reds came one monster choke away from a sweep, the 2 teams were quite close in many categories such as runs, hits and walks, with the Reds getting rather little from a .519 slugging percentage and the Pirates not quite enough from a .374 OBP.  As is the case with most Cincy opponents the Pirates were spectacular in the field, converting 12 of 13 x-plays (92.3%).
