In a series played online (thanks, Jon!), the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 3 games to 2 and await either the Red Sox or Yankees in the 1999 World Series.

Game 1: Starters Al Leiter & Pete Harnisch had nearly equivalent starts, allowing 5 hits, 3 earned runs and 1 walk apiece while combining to fan 14 batters.  CIN Gold Glove 2B Pokey '1e8' Reese botched an x-play on the first batter of the series, setting the tone for Cincy side of the contest, but it was a later error by Harnisch which produced an unearned run that gave New York a 1-run margin and looked like it might decide the game.  Two late runs allowed by the Cincy Arson Squad rendered that moot, however.  Final score: 6-3.  Mike Piazza and Lee Stevens homered for the victorious visitors.  CIN batters had 13 split card chances at hits, got the adverse result 12 times.

Game 2: For the second straight day the Mets got perfect work from their bullpen and for the second straight day flailing Cincy batters went down 12 times on strikes at the hands of NYN hurlers.  A close game was broken open in the 5th when the Mets parlayed 3/4 of a cycle (no gopher) and a walk into 3 runs and there was no further scoring in the 5-1 decision.  NYN starter Mike Hampton not only pitched very well but went 3 for 3 (only 2 fewer hits than he allowed) at the plate with a double and 2 runs scored.

Game 3: The series moved to Shea Stadium with Dave Burba opposing Rick Reed, and with the Reds' backs against the wall the #1 offense in the league finally showed up.  Cincinnati took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd on an Aaron Boone double and things went back and forth afterwards though the Reds never quite blew the lead.  Masato Yoshii, making his first postseason appearance in the 9th, was a little unnerved by the experience and the Reds tacked on 5 late runs to make the close game falsely look like a blowout.  Final score: 9-2.  Ken Griffey Jr. and Ed Taubensee delivered the first homers of the series for the Reds, Reese went 4 for 4, and Scott Sullivan worked 3 scoreless innings for the save.

Game 4: Harnisch vs. Leiter II, and Harnisch had another forgettable day -- almost.  The record-setting power hitter among pitchers demoralized the Mets with a 2-run homer in the 5th and Sean Casey matched that later in the frame to give the Reds a 4-1 lead.  Harnisch then re-moralized the Mets by coughing up 4 runs in the bottom half.  In a somewhat opposite occurrence from the opener, it was the Reds getting scoreless relief and the Mets giving up an unearned run (single+error on a catch-x) which in this case did help decide the outcome by tying the game in the 7th, and the Reds won the 6-5 nailbiter with a run in the 9th against Armando Benitez on a Barry Larkin single through a drawn-in infield after a leadoff triple by Boone.

Game 5: Mike Hampton, whose only 1999 regular season start vs. the Reds lasted less than 1 inning, took the mound again in the NLCS and was excellent again.  The Reds were out of viable starters, so Steve Avery (whose 2 prior appearances had been as a pinch runner) was summoned and told to do the best he could.  With everything on the line, Hampton and Avery exchanged goose eggs for 7 innings.  Avery (7.1 IP, 5 hits, 0 runs) was replaced in the 8th when he allowed a 1-out double to Rickey Henderson but Scott Williamson, after nervously hitting the next batter with a pitch, found the strike zone and fanned Edgardo Alfonso and Mike Piazza to end that threat.

Catcher Einar Diaz entered the game as part of the double switch that removed Avery, and he led off the Cincy half with a single.  Eight of the next 10 batters also reached base (including Diaz a second time) and 6 runs scored as the Mets used 5 different pitchers in the inning.  Williamson encountered some resistance in the 9th but sealed up the series-clinching win, the first for a home team in the NLCS.
